Bomb Scare Triggered By Note At White House Christian School

STORY UPDATED…

WHITE HOUSE TENNESSEE: (Smokey Barn News) – A K-12 Christian school in White House was evacuated Monday after a teacher found a note that indicated that a bomb had been planted at the school.

The call went out around 3:30 pm that a teacher found a notebook at the school with the note inside. According to authorities, the note contained “a writing referring to a bomb being planned at the school.” The school, Christian Community School, located on Hester Dr. in White House MAP was quickly evacuated.

Authorities are actively speaking to a juvenile that Detectives have reason to believe owns the notebook, according to officials at the scene.

The White House Police Department, City of White House Fire Dept., a Hendersonville Police K9 unit, the Robertson County Emergency Management Agency, the Tennessee Highway Patrol, the Robertson County Sheriff’s Office and Robertson County EMS all responded to the scene.

Officials were at the scene for several hours and conducted their final sweep of the school around 6 pm. It was then that the all-clear was given.

UPDATE….

According to White House Police Chief Pat Brady, a juvenile student admitted to writing the note but said it was written a couple of months ago and the notebook was left in the classroom accidentally. No criminal charges have been filed.

Potbelly Pig Finds Love & A Forever Home

Back in July Smokey Barn News posted an alert on the Smokey Lost & Found Page about a potbelly pig that wandered up to the home of Dannie Richards in Cedar Hill and took a liking to one of her pigs.

“We found him in our front yard trying to cozy up to our girl Bunny,” Richards said. “We tried to find his owner but nobody ever came for him. I thought it would be nice to let everyone know that “Porky” and Bunny now enjoy snuggling up on these chilly winter nights. Porky has his girl and his forever home. Merry Christmas!”

They had falls at state but picked up and finished. Most have never done anything at this level and in the end they have pushed thru stuck with it and didn’t give up. (Greenbrier, TN) Former Students Surprise Teachers At Greenbrier Middle School Faculty Meeting

Six Greenbrier High School seniors were surprise speakers at an early-morning Greenbrier Middle School faculty meeting on Friday, Dec. 6.

The six were at GMS at the request of the principal, Kathy Carroll as a motivation for her GMS instructors to see the results of their “paying it forward,” year after year, as they invest themselves in the lives of their middle school learners.

Themes struck by the six speakers included gratitude for making class hard, for creating confidence, for listening, for instilling self-confidence, and for creating self-worth. A recurring theme was that of recognizing and being grateful for the relationships built by the teachers; both inside and outside of the classroom.

As the students spoke, those listening to what they thought was to be just another routine faculty meeting showed visible emotion; nodding heads in a combination of agreement with what they were hearing, and recognition that their efforts, some four years later, had earned the dividends they were now witnessing in real-time.

Robertson County Schools is proud of all of our educators, and this brief meeting was a tangible and visible example of what goes on throughout the district daily, and why we do what we do. The core of the district’s mission statement: to, “enable all students to reach and exceed high academic standards while empowering them to succeed in a technologically-advanced and culturally-diverse society,” was evident as these soon-to-be-graduates recounted both the “high academic standards,” and the, “empowering,” that their middle-school years produced and inspired.

(Coopertown, TN) Frierson Chapel added to the National Register of Historic Places

The Tennessee Historical Commission (THC), the state agency that is designated as the State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO), today announced the addition of eight properties to the National Register of Historic Places including the Frierson Chapel.

“Tennessee has a tremendous inheritance of important historic places that are highlighted by the diversity of these recent National Register listings.” said State Historic Preservation Officer and Executive Director Patrick McIntyre.
The sites recently added to the National Register of Historic Places are:

The Frierson Chapel property is composed of a 1946 church building, the remains of a school, a privy and a cemetery that was established circa 1880. The congregation was formed as the New Bethel (CME) Church in 1870. It was not until the extant church building was constructed that it became known as Frierson Chapel, named after Rev. R.D. Frierson, who became the pastor in 1946. The historic church served the African American community in Cooperstown until 1992. The school was open until 1949 when it was consolidated with the larger African American Bransford School in nearby Springfield. The nominated property is a good representation of the pattern where African American schools and churches were constructed adjacent to each other and were used not only for education and religious purposes but as community centers.

The National Register of Historic Places is the nation’s official list of cultural resources worthy of preservation. It is part of a nationwide program that coordinates and supports efforts to identify, evaluate and protect historic resources. The SHPO administers the program in Tennessee.

To find out more about our programs click here.

Frierson Chapel: Coopertown, TN

Frierson Chapel is historic from several perspectives. First, it is an African American church whose congregation was established in 1870. When first established the congregation named their church the Methodist Church at New Bethel. In 1880 one of the citizens of the community sold the present church site to the congregation and the New Bethel church was built. In 1892 a school was built on the property and offered an education through the eighth grade to the African American community. The church continued in operation until a tornado destroyed it in 1943. In 1946 the church was rebuilt by the then pastor, Reverend W.D. Frierson, after whom the church was named. Through the years more than fifty parishoners were interned in the church’s cemetery. In 1996 the church was closed due to loss of membership through death and assimilation of its members into other area churches.

Several times during the intervening years various previous members and the children of previous members attempted to preserve the church by keeping the grounds mowed and the church closed-up to the elements. Over the years, however, the church and the school have been ravaged by the elements, vandalism and wild animals. Today the school has been completely destroyed. The church, however, is still in pretty good shape. The cemetery is over grown by trees and other vegetation. This past May 2013 in an effort to better preserve the church and grounds the last members of the congregation persuaded the United Methodist Church to donate the church and grounds to the Town of Coopertown.

The church register was found and returned several years ago to the United Methodist Church in Clarksville. It is hoped that it can be recovered. It is believed that this record will provide information as to whom is buried in the cemetery, who the church members were throughout the years, and other important historical data with regard to the church. The hope is that the ancestral information can be used by current and former citizens and relatives of our Town and members of the church when searching for non-living family members.

It is planned to rebuild the school, and restore the cemetery and the rest of the grounds for use by the community and visitors interested in the history of our nation, state and community.

Ten in TN

Ten in Tennessee

The Tennessee Preservation Trust’s Ten in Tennessee Endangered Properties List Program is TPT’s strongest advocacy tool for the state’s most endangered historic sites. Each year, TPT seeks nominations for the “Ten in Tenn” from the public from each of Tennessee’s nine Development Districts.

What began in 2001 has grown to be a successful program for garnering awareness for Tennessee’s threatened historic properties. Many of the sites listed have received grants from the Tennessee Historical Commission (THC) and the Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT), protecting these resources for generations to come. Listing on the Ten in Tennessee Endangered List raises awareness of the property’s historic value, gives credibility to restoring the building, and draws the much needed attention of the public.

(Portland, TN) Letter to the Editor

I can’t help but notice that in today’s society, the true meaning of Christmas has become lost. There are people who don’t care much about whether Jesus’ birth actually happened.

But, what would it be like if Jesus had never been born?

If Jesus had not come, God would be unknown. God revealed himself by coming into this world in the person of His Son, Jesus Christ, to show us who He is. He is the image of the invisible God. The Bible says in Matthew 1:23 they called His name Emmanuel, which means, God with us. The Bible says in John 14:6 that there isn’t any other way to know God except through Jesus.

If Jesus had not come, we could not be saved from our sins. The Bible says in Matthew 1:21, that Jesus came to save His people from their sins. Almighty God wanted to bring us to heaven, but He is a holy God and He cannot bring us to heaven as sinful creatures. So in order for him both to be a just God and a loving God, he sent the perfect Son of God to His earth, who was born in a manger, went to the cross, paid the penalty for our sin. All we have to do is confess and repent (turn from sin) and trust in Jesus Christ and God will forgive our sins and grant eternal life with him in heaven

So If Jesus had not come, our God would be unknown and our sins would be unforgiven. If there were no Jesus, our hope would be unfounded. The sad truth is that many people are living their life as though He was never born.

Christmas is the celebration of the most important event in the history of humanity, that God would love us and send His son to be our savior. Jesus is God’s gift to the world. If you take this gift, it will be the most blessed Christmas you have ever experienced.

The Pleasant View Volunteer Fire Department is proud to announce the graduation of Booter class 2019.

This course began in mid-August and finished the end of November as the graduates received their badges and certificate of completion. This course included the TFACA blended 64 hour course and was supplemented by additional training provided by the PVVFD. This approach allowed for online, hands on, and classroom sessions to reach the students. The content included the Basic Firefighting (FF100) course, CPR, vehicle extrication, FF I live burns, haz-mat, etc.

The graduation ceremony was conducted by the PVVFD and hosted at 24 Church, where graduates shared their special night with family, friends, and fellow firefighters. The program included messages from our Chief Officers, words from the class given by class president Skye Cleaver, and a badge pinning ceremony. We ended the evening with refreshments, pictures, and fellowship.

We are extremely proud of Booter class 2019 and welcome them into the PVVFD family as our newest Probationary Firefighters. We look forward to seeing them make a difference in the communities we serve.

Clarksville Police Union #18 Sponsors Over 135 Children for Kids and Cops Christmas Shopping

It was an absolutely amazing day as the Clarksville Police Union #18 sponsored a Kids Shopping with Cops Extravaganza at Sango Walmart, Dec 7. They sponsored a holiday shopping spree for over 135 children. There were many heart rending moments as each child made gift selections. Some shopped for themselves, and others wanted to buy gifts for everyone else except themselves.

Officers from Clarksville Police Department, Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office, VA Police and civilians with a connection to law enforcement escorted the kids around to help pick out the perfect gift. It was hard to tell who was having a better time, the children or the officers.

We’d like to thank our local businesses, organizations and the community for their generous donations, which made the shopping day possible.

Cross-County Vehicle Burglary Suspects Captured In Greenbrier

GREENBRIER TENNESSEE: (Smokey Barn News) – A Saturday night Sunday morning 911 call about a suspicious vehicle in Greenbrier led authorities to at least two suspects and a carload of alleged stolen property.

According to officials in Greenbrier, police were called to subdivisions near Rose St and Cartwright Way MAP and Franklin Farms. MAP When officers arrived on Rose St. they observed 19-year-old Darlene Seckinger of Old Hickory, TN/Greenbrier walking towards the suspicious vehicle. Behind the wheel was 24-year-old Joshua Cathey of Nashville/Greenbrier.

Detectives believe that Ms. Seckinger was burglarizing vehicles while Mr. Cathey acted as the getaway driver. Once the two suspects were taken into custody police searched the vehicle and recovered a handgun, purses, wallets, medications, money, jewelry, cell phones and phone accessories, electronics, IDs, Debit/Credit cards, gift cards, checks, mail and personal paperwork, computer bags/briefcases, and even sunglasses and cigarettes.

After some research and communication with surrounding agencies, Greenbrier Detectives were able to connect at least part of the property recovered with vehicle burglary cases across Robertson County.

Detectives believe the couple (and possibly others yet to be identified) started their crime spree after midnight in Pleasant View and were making their way down Betts Rd going city by city and into Greenbrier.

Police were beginning the process of reuniting property to victims the following morning as police reports started to come in. Most of the property taken in Greenbrier has already been returned to the victims. The process of returning the property in other areas is still ongoing.

According to Greenbrier Police, the suspects have not been very cooperative but private security and Ring cameras have been very helpful to police as they piece together the suspect’s actions as well as identifying other suspect(s).

In the short window of time that Greenbrier Detectives believe the burglaries occurred, four confirmed victims in Greenbrier were identified and at least four or five more were located in surrounding cities.

Cathey was charged with Burgery, Theft Under $1000 and Unlawful Possession Of A Firearm. His bond has been set at $10,500.

Seckinger was charged with two counts of Burglary, Theft Of Property Under $500 and Theft Under $1000. Her bond has been set at $13,500.

Police also indicated that there was a possibility that drug charges may follow.

Coopertown Police are also dealing with a rash of vehicle burglaries and they have released the following statement to citizens.

“There have been many recent reports of theft from motor vehicles in Coopertown. Unfortunate for the victims, the thieves have had their jobs made easy. Thieves are going from car to car, pulling on door handles, searching for an unlocked vehicle. When they find one unlocked, they’re helping themselves to your firearms, jewelry, medication, electronics, credit cards, cash, loose change, and anything else shiny and not secured.

Many people have installed security cameras. While cameras are a great asset and deterrent, they are not a 100% fix. They might capture some great evidence and they might not. However, every bit of protection is good.

The most important thing you can do to help prevent yourself from being a victim of theft is to lock your doors. Don’t leave valuables in your car. Keep an eye on your neighborhood. If you see something out of place, don’t hesitate to call law enforcement to investigate.

Police: Stolen Plates, Vehicle Thefts Hot Trend For Unattended Warming Cars

SPRINGFIELD TENNESSEE: (Smokey Barn News) –  On Monday, the above vehicle was spotted on Ben Dr. MAP and is believed to be a getaway car involved in a motor vehicle theft, according to Springfield Police.

A witness saw a white male subject exit the vehicle and allegedly steal a black Chevrolet Impala. After the Impala was taken the vehicles traveled in different directions.

The tag on the vehicle comes back to a blue Dodge Dart, however, it is not the tag that goes on the vehicle, police said.

Further investigation would reveal that the owner of the tag on the car pictured above had a different tag on his vehicle that had been stolen.

The year sticker that goes in the top right-hand corner of the license plate belonged to yet another stolen tag. All of these tag numbers come back to Dodge Darts.

WARNING: Please remember that these suspects are watching for people that are allowing their vehicles to warm up in the mornings and once they see this, they are stealing the cars.

Be careful if you are allowing your vehicle to warm up. If there is any information on this vehicle please contact Detective Chad Clinard with the Springfield Police Dept.

Weather Alert: Flooding Roads & Travel Advisory

Weather Alert: Flooding Roads & Travel Advisory

ROBERTSON COUNTY TENNESSEE: (Smokey Barn News) – The continuous and heavy rains are causing flooding through Robertson County. Roadways and bridges are starting to become impassable at this time.

The Robertson County Emergency Management Agency’s swift-water rescue team is on standby if you become trapped.

We currently have reports of flooding on Kinney’s Rd, Fulton Rd, Abedinego Rd, Martins Chapel, Lipscomb Ln, Mt Zion Rd and Memorial Blvd in Springfield between 8th and Central. Also, reports that Woods Rd in Coopertown, Reeder School Rd and Mt. Sharon Road in Greenbrier are impassible at this time.

This weather is expected to stay with throughout the day and into the evening.

Robertson County Schools closed two hours early due to the heavy rain.

Robertson County is under a flash flood watch until midnight:

Flash flood watch remains in effect until midnight CST tonight according to the Nashville – TN, US, National Weather Service. The flash flood watch continues for * a portion of middle Tennessee, including the following areas: Robertson, Cannon, Cheatham, Clay, Davidson, De Kalb, Dickson, Fentress, Hickman, Houston, Humphreys, Jackson, macon, Montgomery, Overton, Perry, Pickett, Putnam, Robertson, rutherford, smith, Stewart, Sumner, Trousdale, Williamson, and Wilson counties until midnight CST tonight.

An additional 1-3 inches is possible for areas that received 2-3 inches last night. The main areas of concern are along and north of I-40, however others in the watch could see localized flooding by this evening, as well. Precautionary/preparedness actions… A flash flood watch means that conditions may develop that lead to flash flooding. Flash flooding is a very dangerous situation. You should monitor later forecasts and be prepared to take action should flash flood warnings be issued.

Additional heavy rain expected this afternoon and tonight. Several places across northern middle TN received 2-3 inches of rainfall last night and with multiple rounds of heavy rain still expected across these same areas this afternoon and evening, a flash flood watch has become necessary. 1-3 inches is expected across the middle TN this afternoon and evening, including the same areas as last night.

Motorists are advised to limit travel if possible until the weather improves. If you do become trapped by rising water call 911.

Turn Around Don’t Drown – See VIDEOS Below

“There could be concerns that some area roadways, especially secondary ones, at particular locations could be covered with unknown depth of water. We have a saying here at the National Weather Service (NWS) Office in Nashville concerning this: When Flooded Turn Around Don’t Drown. It is very important to remember that to never drive around the barriers blocking a flooded road! The road may have collapsed under that water. A mere 6 inches of fast-moving flood water can knock over an adult. It takes just 12 inches of rushing water to carry away most cars and just 2 feet of rushing water can carry away SUVs and trucks. It is NEVER safe to drive or walk into flood waters!”

If you live in a flood prone area, get prepared now with flood safety tips at www.weather.gov/safety/flood.

EpiPens Coming To Every Robertson County School

ROBERTSON COUNTY TENNESSEE: (Smokey Barn News) – For those who have experienced a severe allergic reaction it can be terrifying.  It’s called Anaphylaxis (an-a-fi-LAK-sis) and it’s a serious, life-threatening allergic reaction to things like foods, insect stings, medications, and even latex.

With over 11,000 students attending Robertson County Schools, it’s not if but when, and the district wants to be prepared. It has been on the district’s radar for some time.

Now, thanks in part to new legislation, EpiPens will soon be available at all Robertson County Schools. The legislation (TCA 49-50-1602) allows for schools to purchase EpiPens for medical use by nursing staff.

Administered moments after severe allergy symptoms present, EpiPens can stop the body’s overreaction and potentially save a life.

Within just a few months the district will have at least one EpiPen in each school. A Dr.’s prescription will be the final step before the medical devices will be made available at each school.

A final voted to approve the device was made by the Board of Education at the December board meeting.

The EpiPens will enable each school to provide potentially life-saving treatment that can be administered even before emergency medical staff can arrive.

“As a father of a child with a severe nut allergy, this new program is very personal to me. I am excited that this is happening in our school system,” said Dr. Chris Causey, Director of Schools.

“I am excited to finally get this program up and running. It has been discussed for a while now. Having these EpiPens in stock at our schools will help to provide just one more level of protection to our students and staff,” said Amber Hester, School Nursing Coordinator.

It was there that he met and married the love of his life, Ann Newberry Schneider. Larry was a member of Springfield First United Methodist Church, and an unwavering weekly member of the Praise Team band. He leaves behind a tremendous legacy of enjoyment and love of life through travel, golf, music, cars, and delicious food. His friends and family greatly enjoyed his vast knowledge of these topics and knew that every conversation with him would inevitably contain two key components: knowledge of something new they did not know before and true, laugh out loud inducing hilarity and humor. SPRINGFIELD TENNESSEE: (Smokey Barn News) – Terry Martin, Springfield‘s Director of Parks and Recreation told Smokey Barn News Tuesday afternoon that after careful consideration, Winter Wonderland at Travis Price Park will remain closed this evening.

Mr. Martin and his team will be carefully analyzing the park over the next 24 hours to try to determine whether or not it would be safe to open the park tomorrow evening.

Larry Schneider, Husband Of Springfield Mayor Ann Schneider Dies Unexpectedly, He Was 73

SPRINGFIELD TENNESSEE: (Smokey Barn News) – Larry Schneider, husband of Springfield Mayor Ann Schneider has died. He was 73.

Larry had just been given the green light after a battle with cancer and things were improving. “We were making plans,” Ann told Smokey Barn News Tuesday. “You just never know.”

Ann said that she and Larry had enjoyed a wonderful week together going to dinners and events celebrating Larry’s recovery and the holidays.

A chance date put Ann and Larry together. It was a date that would last for twenty-seven-years. Now Ann is devastated and leaning on family and friends as she writes a new chapter in her life.

Ann told Smokey Barn News that Larry will take one last ride in his favorite pickup following funeral services on Thursday. The plan is to place Larry’s casket in the back of the truck for the procession. It was the idea of Ann’s brother Horace Newberry. Ann said it just seemed like something Larry would have loved.

Ann wanted to especially thank Dr. Sabi Kumar for his compassionate treatment, care, and concern. “It’s difficult to put into words how wonderful Dr. Kumar has been to my family, I will always be grateful to him.”

Obituary for Larry J. Schneider

Mr. Schneider was born on October 29, 1946, in Gaylord, Minnesota. He died on Sunday, December 15, 2019, at North Crest Medical Center in Springfield. He served his country with honor, courage and commitment as a member of the U.S. Navy from 1966 until 1970 on the USS Bon Homme Richard CVA-31 in Vietnam. He was proud to be a “Navy man.”

floral squareHis industriousness, earnestness and diligence then led him to Springfield, Tennessee where he was the owner of S&S Precision for nearly three decades.

He is survived by his loving wife of twenty-seven years, Ann Newberry Schneider and sweet Cocoa, their much-loved Pomeranian and constant companion.

Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, December 19th at 10:00 a.m. at the Springfield First United Methodist Church with Reverend Jerry Wallace and Reverend Dr. Jason Wilkerson officiating. Burial will follow in Elmwood Cemetery.  The family will receive friends at Springfield First United Methodist Church on Wednesday from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. and Thursday from 9:00 a.m. until the hour of service.
