Weekend Hwy 76 Crash Turns Fatal

WHITE HOUSE: (Smokey Barn News) – A two-vehicle violent fiery head-on crash on Hwy 76/Portland Rd. Saturday that initially sent two people to the hospital has turned fatal, according to the Tennessee Highway Patrol.

The crash occurred just before 3:30 pm on Hwy 76/Portland Rd/White House Rd near Circle Drive. MAP Hwy 76 was closed for several hours while the THP investigated the crash.

The head-on crash sent both vehicles spinning. One of the vehicles was engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived. Due to the work of first responders, neither driver was burned.

Both victims were transported to local hospitals via ground, one in serious condition and a second patient in stable condition. Now, according to the Tennessee Highway Patrol, one of the drivers has died.

According to the investigating Trooper, 22-year-old Chris Brooks of Cottontown, driving West on Hwy 76 in a 2005 Ford/F150, ran off the roadway on the right side. Brooks overcorrected and crossed the center line directly into the path of an eastbound 2009 Pontiac VGT driven by 65-year-old Paul Murray of Lebanon Tennessee. Both vehicles collided head-on.

The F150 went down a slight embankment struck a wire fence and ended up in a yard and caught on fire as a result of the crash.

Drivers of both vehicles were entrapped. Both Drivers were transported to Skyline in Nashville due to their injuries. 65-year-old Paul Murray of Lebanon Tennessee succumbed to his injuries on Monday.

Both drivers were wearing safety restraints.

According to the THP, charges were already pending for Chris Brooks before Murray’s passing. The specifics of the charges were not immediately available. Whether Murray’s passing will affect the disposition of charges for Brooks is unknown at this time.

Agencies from across the area were called out to the scene including the White House Community Volunteer Fire Department, Sumner County EMS, the Sumner County Sheriff’s Office, and the Tennessee Highway Patrol.

Smokey Barn News has been in contact with the family of Paul Murray. The family is understandably devastated by Paul’s passing. A Go-Fund-Me page to help with burial expenses is currently being set up by family members. As soon as we have the link we will add it to this report. Reload this page for updates.

Local Woman, 46, Charged With Statutory Rape Of 15-Year-Old Boy

MILLERSVILLE TENNESSEE: (Smokey Barn News) – According to the Millersville Police Department, 46-year-old April Nicole Roach of Greenbrier was taken into custody Wednesday following a four-month investigation triggered by a report that she was allegedly involved in a sexual relationship with a 15-year male juvenile.

During the course of the investigation, it was determined that sexual acts with the 15-year-old male allegedly occurred numerous times and in various jurisdictions.

On December 4th, 2019, detectives presented the evidence to the Sumner County Grand Jury where a sealed indictment was returned.

On December 18th 2019, Roach was arrested and booked into the Sumner County Jail on 10 counts of statutory rape by an authority figure.

The case is currently being investigated by other law enforcement agencies; therefore, no further information will be provided at this time.

Just yesterday the Millersville Police Department assisted the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation’s Technical Services Unit with an arrest in a similar case involving Sexual Exploitation of a Minor.

The investigation, headed by the TBI, led to the indictment of a Goodlettsville man.

According to a release obtained by Smokey Barn News, back in March of this year, TBI Agents received information via a cyber tip from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children that an individual had allegedly uploaded and received multiple images of child pornography through an online application. During the course of the investigation, Agents identified that individual as Drexel Cleveland.

On December 3rd, the Sumner County Grand Jury returned indictments charging 63-year-old Drexel Lloyd Cleveland with 14 counts of Sexual Exploitation of a Minor and three counts of Aggravated Sexual Exploitation of a Minor. On Tuesday (December 17th, 2019), TBI Agents, with the assistance of the Millersville Police Department, arrested Cleveland. He was booked into the Sumner County Jail on a $150,000 bond.

Each year’s program is unique, but previous programs have included sessions on leadership personality assessment, media training, crisis management, appreciative inquiry and adaptive leadership. The program encourages participants to evaluate and adapt the way they interact with each other and the world around them, providing an opportunity unlike any other in the nation.

“The CSG Henry Toll Fellowship is designed to be a transformative experience,” said CSG Chief Communications Officer Kelley Arnold. “It’s an opportunity for participants to take a deep look at how they see themselves as public servants building skills that will advance them as leaders. Even better, they come away with a network of new relationships that will enrich their understanding of difficult policy issues and provide a continued resource for growth.”

2020 applications for the Toll Fellowship will be available on Jan. 10, 2020. For more information on the Toll Fellowship, click here

Springfield High School Athletic Association – Larry Mayhugh – Posthumous

Larry Mayhugh was remembered by Coach Boyce Smith as “one of the best players and one of the best kids I have ever known.” He was a 6’2” 235 lb. athlete who was a 5-year starter at Springfield. After he broke into the starting line up as an 8th grader, he started 52 consecutive games and played every position on the team during his career.

He made All-Mid-State as a junior. His senior season he made All-Mid-State, All-State, All-Southern, and All-American. As of 2019, he is one of two Springfield athletes to be named a high school All-American.

Springfield took their 7-2 record to face NIL power Hillsboro in the eighth annual Clinic Bowl. It was Hillsboro’s speed vs Springfield’s power, and the mud battle ended in a 0-0 tie.

Mayhugh was one of Tennessee’s most highly sought prospects prior to signing a SEC grant-in-aid with Vanderbilt. Tragically, Larry died as a result of injuries sustained in a car accident just prior to graduation in 1958.

Larry’s feats on the gridiron will be long remembered but had he never donned a football uniform, he still would have won wide admiration, for Larry was that kind of boy. Both teachers and classmates knew him as a “fine all around boy” – friendly, polite and modest.

Springfield High School Athletic Association Introducing SHS Athletic Hall of Fame Inductee Greg Bell.

Greg is a 1971 graduate of Springfield High School. He lettered in three sports and earned all-conference and all-district in each.

Greg went on to have an outstanding collegiate career at Motlow State and Ottawa University. His tremendous success as a three sport collegiate athlete led to his induction into the Ottawa University Hall of Fame in 2015.

Greg was hired in 1975 to teach health, physical education and coach basketball and football at Springfield Junior High. He coached the 8th and 9th grade boys basketball teams. In 1981 he began his coaching responsibilities at Springfield High School serving on the football and basketball staff. He was the defensive back / running back coach for the 1993 TSSAA Class 3A State Champion Yellow Jackets. He retired in 2014 with 40 years of service.

Springfield High School Athletic Association Travis Kirby became the first TSSAA State Champion in any sport from Springfield High School when he claimed the 1989 TSSAA State Heavyweight Wrestling Championship.

As of 2019, Travis remains Springfield High School’s only state wrestling champion in the program’s 40+ year history. Travis’s performance was dominant, pinning each of his opponents in the championship bracket, a feat rarely duplicated, in TSSAA Championship history.

Travis attended the University of Tennessee as an invited walk on for the football team under the direction of head coach Phil Fulmer. He transferred to the University of Tennessee Martin where he graduated with a Bachelors of Science in Education. He began his career as a teacher and coach in Louisiana at Northwood High School where he served as an assistant football, head boys basketball, head golf, assistant baseball and assistant track coach. In 1999 he moved to Texas to teach at George Junior High.

Travis began to create his own wrestling coaching legacy in Texas starting a program at both Terry High School and Lamar Consolidated High School. In 2010 Travis accepted a position at the brand new George Ranch High School where he started his third wrestling program in 10 years. Travis continued to coach football at George Ranch, serving as the offensive line coach as they won the 2015 Class 5A state football championship.

Travis is currently a member of the English faculty and serves as head wrestling coach for both the Girls and Boys programs at George Ranch High School. He has coached 37 individual district champions, 36 regional medalists, 2 state medalists.

The Millersville Police Department is partnering with the Tennessee Highway Safety Office (THSO) to increase impaired-driving enforcement from December 13, 2019, to January 1, 2020, surrounding the holiday season.

The THSO’s statewide Booze It and Lose It campaign is part of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over nationwide mobilization.

“Motorists can expect to see increased patrols throughout the city. Year to date there have been nearly 70 more road related deaths than this time last year. Please remember when you are behind the wheel, nothing is more important than paying attention to the road ahead.” Said Sergeant Josh Barnes

Increased state and national messaging about the dangers of drunk driving, coupled with increased sobriety checkpoints and high visibility enforcement, aim to drastically reduce the number of drunk-driving crashes, injuries, and fatalities this year.

“We ask all Tennesseans to please drive safely this holiday season,” said THSO Director Buddy Lewis. “Our state and local law enforcement partners will be out in full force to secure Tennessee roadways. We want everyone to make it home safely, so please designate a sober driver.”

The consequences of a single DUI conviction for a first-time offender in the state of Tennessee may include costly fines, court costs, legal fees, jail time, mandatory drug and alcohol treatment, and/or the installation of an ignition interlock device in his/her vehicle.

The THSO provides grant funding to support The Millersville Police Department’s increased enforcement efforts during the Booze It and Lose It holiday campaign. For more information about the THSO, please visit www.tntrafficsafety.org.

(White House, TN) Emily Thompson Named As White House Heritage High Interim Assistant Principal

Dr. Emily Thompson has been names as Interim Assistant Principal of White House Heritage High School following the resignation of Dr. Chris Tucker.

Thompson earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration and Marketing from the University of Tennessee in 2009 and a master’s degree in Business Education from Middle Tennessee State University in 2011. She began teaching with Robertson County Schools in August of that year and has served in three separate schools, including WHHHS, over her teaching career. She comes to her new responsibilities from Springfield High School where she was the Response to Intervention Coordinator and Academic Coach.

Thompson expanded her educational qualifications; first in 2016 with an Education Specialist certification, and again in 2019 with a Doctor of Education degree, both from Union University. She has worked extensively with the RTI program in several schools, coordinating responses for students to help them gain or maintain scholastic skills.

Emily was raised in Springfield, where she attended school through 8th grade before finishing her high school career at Beech High School in Hendersonville. Husband, Kris, grew up in Adams and is a Jo Byrns graduate. Married for 7 years, they have two children, 6 year-old Kennedy and Easton, who is two.

Assuming the responsibilities of an Assistant Principal is something Thompson says she’s looking forward to, saying, “I am blessed and very excited to join White House Heritage High School.”

Principal Kim Haas says she too, is looking forward to January and is pleased with having Thompson on-board in her new capacity.

“I am excited to welcome Dr. Thompson to the Patriot Nation as the new assistant principal at Heritage HS,” she said. “We are looking forward to the many opportunities that having Dr. Thompson here will offer.”

(White House, TN) Giving Spirit Reflected At Robert F. Woodall Library with “Secret Santa” program

The library at Robert F. Woodall Elementary School recently participated in a “Library Secret Santa” program to pay off the fees of students whose library privileges had been limited due to lost or damaged books.

The program was inspired by an anonymous donor who wished to pay the fines of students who had limited checkout privileges. This donor made the request after reading about a similar program at a library in Kentucky. The gift was made in memory of her son, whose grandson attends Woodall Elementary. School Librarian, Jamie Marvin noted, “We were honored and grateful to receive this generous donation. Many students at our school have accidents or lose library books due to circumstances beyond their control. Allowing students the opportunity to continue to check out new books is a rewarding gift that all can benefit from.”

Additionally, students and families were given the opportunity to participate in program if they had outstanding overdue books, and were in need of financial assistance.

This initiative is a heart-warming and practical reflection on both the spirit of this season of giving, and on the RFW family and community.

Rollover Crash Triggers Brief Manhunt After Speeding Driver Flees Christmas Eve

STORY UPDATED

SPRINGFIELD TENNESSEE: (Smokey Barn News) – A rollover crash in Springfield triggered a brief three agency manhunt after a local man failed to stop for speeding, crashed his vehicle and then fled on foot Christmas Eve.

The incident began just after 10:30 pm Christmas Eve when authorities spotted a speeding vehicle heading into Springfield on HWY 41.  According to officials, the driver failed to stop.  After leading authorities on a brief chase, the pursuit was terminated. Moments later the vehicle crashed.

The crash occurred at the intersection of Bill Jones Industrial Dr. and Elder Dr. MAP After the driver lost control, the vehicle left the roadway and rolled down a steep embankment landing at the bottom of a small ravine.

Somehow the driver (now identified as Jose A. Euyoque Jr., 36, of Springfield) escaped the violent crash without serious injuries and fled the scene on foot to a home on Phillip Dr. located some 500 feet from the crash. MAP The Tennesee Highway Patrol, the Springfield Police Department, and the Robertson County Sheriff’s Office all began a brief manhunt.

As detectives followed the driver’s trail to Phillip Dr, citizens and a 911 call led them to a home where Euyoque was located and taken into custody. The 911 caller stated that a Hispanic male had entered their residence on Phillip Dr and asked them not to alert the authorities. Officials at the scene told Smokey Barn News that Euyoque knew people at the home.

At the crash site, the vehicle, a 2011 Chevrolet Avalanche, was wedged tight between several large boulders at the bottom of the ravine. With a little ingenuity, Payne Chevrolet Towing was able to extract the vehicle.

Euyoque was transported to the Robertson County Detention Facility in Springfield. Officials at the scene told Smokey Barn News that Euyoque had active warrants. A search of the vehicle netted two guns.

CHARGES:

Euyoque has been Charged with Felony Evading by Vehicle, DUI 2nd, Simple Possession of Schedule VI, Possession of a Handgun While Intoxicated, Criminal Trespass, Speeding, Roadways Laned for Travel, Assault Domestic, and Failure To Appear. His bond has been set at $37,000.

The Tennesee Highway Patrol, the Springfield Police Department, and the Robertson County Sheriff’s Office, the Springfield Fire Department, Robertson County EMS, and Payne Chevrolet Towing all responded to the scene.

New Law Enables Comparison Shopping For Medical Services

NEW RIGHT TO SHOP TRANSPARENCY LAW TAKES EFFECT JANUARY 1 EMPOWERING HEALTH CARE CONSUMERS

(NASHVILLE), December 26, 2019 — Legislation establishing a consumer-driven program which provides patients with more transparency regarding the costs of health care services in their network is set to take effect on January 1 in Tennessee. The new law, sponsored by Senator Kerry Roberts (R-Springfield), requires health insurance providers to implement a shopping and decision support program which discloses the costs of non-emergency outpatient services or procedures to enrollees in their plan.

“This new law creates a database which discloses the cost for certain procedures so the patient can make an informed choice that fits within their budget or deductible,” said Sen. Roberts. “Approximately 40 to 50 percent of all healthcare services are shoppable, including physical and occupational therapy services, radiology and imaging services, laboratory services, and infusion therapy.”

Sponsored

“Having the opportunity to compare prices empowers patients to make the best choices for their needs,” he added. “It also puts pressure on health care service suppliers that they have to compete, which drives down costs.”

Roberts said consumer choice of lower-cost options could also benefit insurance companies. Under the new law, health insurers would be allowed to offer incentives to enrollees for choosing the lower-cost option, such as providing consumers up to 50 percent of the difference for going to a less expensive provider. The incentives may be provided as a cash payment to the enrollee, a credit toward their in-network deductible and out-of-pocket limits, or a credit or reduction of a premium, copayment, cost-sharing, or deductible.

“Insurance companies would not be allowed to require or steer a patient to use a lower-cost provider. It is strictly voluntary on the part of the patient,” Roberts added.

“This new law will benefit everyone and will hopefully address the rising costs of healthcare services. It will greatly impact the way Tennesseans shop for services and help consumers manage healthcare costs,” Roberts concluded.

The new law applies to all health plans entered into or renewed in Tennessee on or after January 1, 2020, with the consumer incentives becoming effective January 1, 2021.

Fire investigators have labeled the fire as suspicious in the absence of an obvious cause with a barn that has no electrical service.

The incredible save by firefighters increases the possibility of determining a cause as investigators look into the fire. If more information becomes available, we will bring it to you.

Macy’s Departing From Rivergate Mall After 49 Years

Macy's Departing From Rivergate Mall After 49 Years

Macy’s Departing From Rivergate Mall After 49 Years

GOODLETTSVILLE, TENNESSEE: (Smokey Barn News) – The Macy’s store located at the Rivergate Shopping Center in Goodlettsville has announced that they are beginning the process of closing their location at the mall after a 49-year run, according to officials with Macy’s.

The confirmation came via Macy’s, Inc. Media Relations out of Chicago.

“After careful consideration, Macy’s has decided to close Macy’s Rivergate Mall store in Goodlettsville, TN.  A clearance sale will begin in January 2020 and run for approximately 8-12 weeks.

“Macy’s previously shared this information with our valued colleagues. Regular, non-seasonal colleagues who we are unable to place at nearby Macy’s store will be eligible for severance, including outplacement resources.

“The decision to close a store is always a difficult one, but Macy’s is proud to have served the Goodlettsville community over the past 49 years, and we look forward to continuing to do so at nearby Macy’s stores including Macy’s Green Hills, Macy’s Cool Springs and online at macys.com.”

It was just last year that Sears left the Rivergate Mall. Malls across the nation and around the world are having to reinvent themselves in the wake of online commerce.

This is not the first time that retail has had to reinvent itself. Walmart had a profound effect on how Americans shop and are now themselves adjusting to the reality of online convenience shopping.

Some malls, like the Mall Of America seen in the video below,  look more like amusement parks than shopping centers and others are catering to the online gaming community.

Today big money is trying to figure out what the retail landscape will look like in ten years. If they can guess it right, there’s a bucket of cash waiting for them at the end. What do you think?  Will we still have malls in 10 or 20 years? If so, what will they look like?  Will storefront retail comply and die in the wake of online shopping? Tell us in comments below.

Here’s a look back a Payne’s incredible history in Robertson County….

Payne Chevrolet: A Brief Look At Over 90 Years In Robertson County

ROBERTSON COUNTY TENNESSEE: (Smokey Barn News) – Payne Chevrolet has been a staple in Springfield, Tennessee since 1926, enduring the Great Depression and thriving throughout the years in three different locations in Robertson County. Regardless of their location, the care and support they feedback into the community have been the same since their beginning. “Our first location was established in 1926 in downtown Springfield, TN on Main Street,” said Alex Payne, and great-grandson of Byram Payne who is currently acting as the firm’s Digital Marketing Manager. “This is where the current playground/parking lot is for Springfield Baptist Church. The lot was a very tiny space, so we were only there for a few years until 1928.”

“Once a little expansion was necessary, our next location was on Locust Street, where the current Robertson County Senior Center is located. The business expanded to two different buildings, one for service and one for sales showroom and office spaces, to increase productivity. Despite the efficiency between the two buildings, the space maxed out around having 30 vehicles available at any time. So as a result of increased business, the need arose yet again for an even bigger area. So in 1969 we built a new building with more lot space and moved into our current and final location at 2807 Memorial Blvd. in Springfield, TN.

Notice the Post Office left, now the Robertson County Museum.

“Payne Chevrolet was started by Mr. Byram Payne in January of 1926. With some help from his brother Van, the two managed the business together for a few years until Byram eventually bought him out completely. Byram made it a family business and brought in his two sons to help out: Don and Bobby Payne. He was succeeded by his two sons and they managed the dealership for a number of years until Don’s sons took over.

“Currently, we are in our THIRD generation of family ownership with Jeff and David Payne at the helm. They have been co-owners and dealers since 1977 and 1985, respectively, and are continuing the family legacy. If you have relatives from Springfield, or in the neighboring towns surrounding it, you have heard about the quality care from Payne Chevrolet. We support many local schools and businesses, allowing us to pour money back into the town where we have been located for over 90 years.”
