Former RC School’s Bus Driver Steals Bus, Tries To Run Old Route

STORY UPDATED: Driver Charged…

ROBERTSON COUNTY TENNESSEE: (Smokey Barn News) – The former Robertson County School’s bus driver that resigned last month following a suspension for alleged distracted driving has been now been arrested and charged after allegedly stealing her old bus and trying to run her old route, according to the Robertson County Sheriff’s Office and Robertson County School’s officials.

The incident occurred on Friday morning. The driver, now identified as Sherry James, 64, of Cross Plains, only made it a short distance on her old route before the Robertson County Sheriff’s Office detained her.

According to the Robertson County Sheriff’s office, a couple of students were in the process of boarding the bus when a Robertson County School’s Resource Officer entered the bus and detained the driver. The bus never moved with students on board.

Last month two videos released to Smokey Barn News captured the driver clearly holding a cell phone while the bus is in motion. The videos were captured by a student. A concerned parent released the videos to Smokey Barn News. At the time of the incident last month, there were two students on board. ORIGINAL STORY

STATEMENT FROM THE SHERIFF OFFICE: UPDATED

“The Robertson County Sheriff’s Office has charged Sherry James with Aggravated Criminal Trespassing, Unauthorized Use of an Automobile and the THP has charged her with Use Of An Electronic Device By A School Bus Driver. She is currently being held at the Robertson County Detention Facility in Springfield under a $3,500 bond.

“The Robertson County Sheriff’s Office is actively investigating an incident involving ex-bus driver Sherry James in Cross Plains, TN.

“Robertson County Sheriff’s Office initially responded to a call by a current bus driver for Robertson County School District, that ex-bus driver Sherry James had taken a school bus from East Robertson High School. A Robertson County Sheriff’s Office School Resource Officer located and stopped the school bus a short distance from the school, where Sherry James was attempting to pick up students.

“Sherry James was immediately detained. No children were harmed during this incident. It was determined Sherry James was attempting to run her old bus route. This investigation is on-going.”

STATEMENT FROM THE ROBERTSON COUNTY SCHOOLS:

“On Friday morning, November 22, a former Robertson County bus driver gained unauthorized access to a district school bus. After attempting to begin a bus route, the driver was stopped by a Robertson County Sheriff’s Office School Resource Officer.

“Prior to being apprehended, the driver traveled approximately one-half mile with the empty bus. Upon reaching the first stop, the bus was boarded by the SRO, who immediately detained the driver before the bus could move with any students on board. The originally assigned driver arrived on the scene and continued the route without incident.”

District officials took quick action after the video surfaced last month showing the driver using a cell phone while driving the school bus with students on board. She was immediately pulled from duty. ORIGINAL STORY

Benefit BBQ Fundraiser Planned For Injured Teen Hit By SUV

ORLINDA TENNESSEE: (Smokey Barn News) – It’s been almost a week since 14-year-old Tuff Slate from Cross Plains was struck by a vehicle on Hwy 49 in Orlinda. Now the community is reaching out to the family with a benefit to raise funds to help the teen’s family with medical expenses.

The accident occurred on Hwy 49 near Brewer Rd. just outside downtown Orlinda. MAP It was last Saturday night and Tuff was attending a birthday party. It was supposed to be a night of fun with friends but it turned into tragedy when Tuff was struck by an SUV.

According to officials at the scene, when first-responders arrived, Tuff, a freshman at East Robertson High School, was in the roadway badly injured. Medics transported him to the Orlinda city park where LifeFlight was waiting to take him to Vanderbilt Medical Center in Nashville. Smokey Barn News was there Saturday night, see our video report below.

Tuff Slate

Tuff Slate

Tuff’s father, Toby Slate, continues to update Smokey Barn News on Tuff’s progress.

Most of Tuff’s injuries are in the face and head area. A portion of his skull was removed to allow the brain to swell and heal but Tuff is able to respond to questions by hand squeezing. Mr. Slate says Tuff is still on a ventilator and doctors are hopeful that they will be able to remove the equipment that helps Tuff breath next week.

“Thank you, it’s overwhelming the amount of love and positivity,” Tuff’s father Toby Slate told Smokey Barn News. “Tuff would be so proud of how the community has come together for him.”

Earlier this week the THP released their preliminary findings on the accident. They indicate the 38-year-old driver from Orlinda, was traveling west on Highway 49 in a 2005 Ford Explorer and struck Tuff as he was attempting to cross the roadway.  No charges have been filed.

The report also indicates that there were a total of 4 occupants in the vehicle. All 4 were wearing safety restraints and there was no mention of drugs or alcohol. Additionally, no one in the vehicle was injured.

A benefit lunch has been planned for Nov. 30. at East Robertson School from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.. Lunch includes BBQ sandwichs, chips and drink for $6.

Baldwin’s BBQ, Drunken Pig BBQ, Whitt’s and True’s BBQ will be providing the delicious eatables.

There will also be a silent auction and a bake sale. All proceeds will go to help Tuff’s family with medical expenses.

If you would like to donate to the silent-action contact Amy Martin at 615-708-2554 or Julie Merrill at 615-456-2837.

If you can’t make it to the BBQ Lunch, donations can also be made to the family at any Farmers Bank under the name “Tuff Slate.” Or Facebook donations can be made to the family here.

HEADER PHOTO: Casey Donahew visits Tuff: “When you can’t make it to see Casey Donahew so he comes to you! We cannot express our Thanks and Love!!! I can’t wait for Tuff to see this!!! Mr. Donehew and your crew are definitely Angels in Cowboy Boots!”

Sen. Roberts Shares Tennessee’s Success with the Fresh Start Act

(Albuquerque, NM) November 22, 2019 – Senator Kerry Roberts (R-Springfield) traveled to Albuquerque, NM, to talk about Tennessee’s Fresh Start Act with other state legislators and advocates. The Fresh Start Act, signed into law in April 2018 by then-Governor Bill Haslam, creates a better path for convicted felons who have served their debt to society to get a job by making it possible for them to obtain an occupational license.

Senator Roberts: “In the past, licensing boards could easily deny a license to a convicted felon who learned a trade or skill while they were incarcerated. Upon release, they apply to be licensed in that trade or skill – for example, electrical wiring – only to discover the board would deny them the opportunity to work as a licensed electrician. The default position was no, unless the released offender could give the board a compelling reason to say yes. All too often, they denied the application. Under the Fresh Start Act, the default position is yes – unless there is a compelling reason to say no. And sometimes there are compelling reasons. For example, a released sex offender isn’t going to be licensed to open a daycare center nor is a convicted embezzler going to be licensed to handle money. But in the end, the Fresh Start Act helps those who have served their time find meaningful employment, thereby dramatically decreasing the likelihood of recidivism. For far too many years, society has punished those convicted of crimes twice: by incarcerating them for a period of time and, upon their release, denying them the opportunity for a job. In Tennessee, with strong bipartisan support, we are leading the nation to a better way with passage of the Fresh Start Act.”

Roberts’ presentation was part of the Criminal Justice Reform Symposium hosted by the Coalition for Public Safety, a non-partisan organization based in Washington DC. The Coalition’s mission is to bring together the nation’s most prominent conservative and progressive leaders in pursuit of meaningful and effective criminal justice reform.

State Representative Report – Sabi ‘Doc’ Kumar MD

Daylight Saving Time

If you could “save time in a bottle”, would it be Daylight Saving Time, also called DST? In Robertson County, we are almost evenly divided about the benefits and the difficulties of this twice a year ritual in which we continue to ‘Spring Forward and Fall Back’.

It all began with my favorite founding father, Ben Franklin, when he was the US Ambassador to France in 1778. Making fun of the late-night habits of the Parisians, Franklin thought that they could save on candles by getting to bed early, and rising earlier in the morning to use more of the natural daylight. Franklin expressed his opinion in a ‘tongue-in-cheek’ article in the Journal of Paris titled, “An Economical Project for Diminishing the Cost of Light”.

It was not until 1916, during World War I, that Germany and other European countries implemented DST to conserve fuel. United States passed a law to enforce DST in 1918 but the idea was unpopular and the law was repealed after World War I. DST was, again, enforced during World War II and was known as “War Time”. After WW II, DST was observed, irregularly, by some states and municipalities. During the 1970s energy crisis, DST again made sense for conserving fuel and energy. Interestingly, DST is generally not observed in countries near the equator, where sunrise times do not vary enough to justify it.

The transportation industry found the lack of consistency in DST changes to be confusing and pushed for a uniform federal regulation called the Uniform Time Act of 1966 which was amended in 1996. Under this Act, moving an area on or off DST is accomplished through Legislative action at the state level and subsequent approval at the federal level.

Early this year, the Tennessee Legislature passed and Governor Bill Lee signed a law that permits Tennessee to stay permanently in the Daylight Saving Time. This means that we would “Spring Forward” and stay in that time permanently if our state law is approved by the federal government.

Our Legislature felt that it made sense to adopt DST permanently for many reasons in addition to the conservation of energy and better use of daylight. DST clock shifts complicate timekeeping, disrupt travel, billing, record keeping, medical devices, heavy equipment, and especially sleep patterns. During an autumn transition from 02:00 to 01:00, a clock reads times from 01:00:00 through 01:59:59 twice, possibly leading to confusion. People who work across time zone boundaries need to keep track of multiple DST rules, as not all locations observe DST or observe it the same way.

Medical harms of the clock shifts are considerable! There is an increase in heart attacks, stroke, depression and suicides, workplace injuries due to hormonal imbalance and disturbance of our circadian rhythm. Students’ test scores suffer. Employee work efficiency is known to fall. In 2017, researchers at the University of Washington and the University of Virginia reported that judges who experienced sleep deprivation, as a result of clock shift, tended to issue longer sentences! No wonder patients frequently ask me if I got a good night’s sleep when I see them before surgery!

One fact is certain. No matter how or when we set the clock, there will always be 24 hours in a day!

Your Voice Matters!…

Dr. Kumar tells Smokey Barn News that the matter was introduced as a bill in the US congress by nine congressmen and two senators. If you would like to help expedite the bill, try reaching out to your Congressman and US Senators and tell them how you feel.

White House Utility District launches web app

New tool provides faster, easier account access for customers on the go
White House Utility District (WHUD), the state’s largest geographic water and wastewater provider, has launched a new web app for customers who need to access their water or wastewater account on the go. The app is free to install on any mobile device.

“We’re always looking for ways to better serve our customers,” said Tammy Barlow, office manager, “and hopefully this new web app will do that.”

The new WHUD web application is an abbreviated version of the District’s main website and can be installed directly on any mobile device, by visiting the District’s website and following the prompt to install.

Key benefits of the new app include:
• Significantly faster and easier account management, including options to view monthly usage, check account balance, update account information or pay a bill,
• Checking for outages using the “find my location” tool,
• Quick access to report a problem with water pressure or wastewater service, and
• The ability to sign up for notifications.

“We’re really excited about the new notifications feature,” said Barlow. “It should help us better communicate important office updates or emergency notifications.”
Customers can install the app by visiting www.whud.org from the device of choice. Android and iOS users will see a pop-up message asking if they want to install the app; Android users will also be asked if they want to receive notifications. Step-by-step instructions are available in the News section of the District’s website.

In addition to the launch of the WHUD mobile web app, customers will also now see an option to receive notifications from WHUD when they visit the website from a desktop computer. If allowed, notifications will pop up on the computer much like a notification for a new email. Customers who opt in for notifications, on a mobile device or desktop computer, can opt out at any time by visiting the device settings/notification center and turning off these notifications.

Anyone with questions or needing assistance can call WHUD’s Customer Care Center at 615-672-4110 or visit www.whud.org.

Coopertown Firefighter Drew Akin was presented with the Coopertown Police Department Life Saving Award at the Coopertown Board of Mayor and Alderman meeting.

Back on Wednesday, August 7, 2019 around 1323 hours, Coopertown Police, Pleasant View Volunteer Fire Department, and Robertson County EMS were dispatched to a report of a male standing on the Highway 49 overpass at Interstate 24 that appeared to be contemplating suicide. Firefighter Drew Akin was the first on scene and to make contact with the subject. As law enforcement was arriving on scene, Firefighter Akin was walking with the subject, away from the interstate and back toward the subject’s vehicle. Firefighter Akin successfully talked the subject out of wanting to jump from the bridge and had him agreeing to seek help. It was Firefighter Akin’s quick response and meritorious actions that potentially saved the life of the subject that day.

For his meritorious actions on that day, Firefighter Drew Akin is presented with the Coopertown Police Department Life Saving Award on this 19th day of November, 2019.

In Orlinda, TN News

Orlinda, TN Christmas Parade…

“City Council voted Thursday November 14 not to have an Orlinda Christmas Parade this year. The following reasons were cited by officials for their decision:

• The low number or actual parade floats created and entered in past parades.

• The sparse attendance at recent Orlinda parades.

• The fact that not a single person has contacted a City Council member or City Hall in the past 11 months to express an interest in having a parade or in helping to organize it.

• The fact that there are so many parades within a 15 mile radius of Orlinda makes it very easy for any family wishing to attend a Christmas Parade to do so.

• The demands that a parade puts on unpaid Orlinda Fire Department Volunteers, Sheriff Department employees, and all the elected officials who feel obligated to participate in an Orlinda Parade in spite of its low attendance and participation.

All of these reasons were cited in the discussion leading up to the final decision to not have a Christmas Parade. There is always the possibility of bringing it back, but it will not be this year.

Obituary for Paul Jennings Tabor

Paul Jennings Tabor of Nashville and formerly of Springfield, went to be with Jesus on Sunday November 24, 2019 at the age of 91. He was born at home on September 4, 1928 in Brotherton, TN, the son of the late Charles Dewey “CD” and Nellie Mae Castleman Tabor, Sr.

He was a high school graduate from Harrison Chilhowee Baptist Academy in 1946, a college graduate from Cumberland University in Lebanon in 1950, was ordained as a pastor in 1950, and graduated from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in 1957. He married Nancy Jean Krisle on April 20, 1951 and over the next 15 years they were blessed to have 6 children.

He began pastoring Southern Baptist churches in 1950 and continued pastoring and working with churches until 2007. He pastored churches in Bell Buckle, Hokes Bluff, AL, Livingston, Tullahoma, Lawrenceburg, Holly Pond, AL, and Greenbrier. He was the Director of Missions for Simpson County Kentucky Baptist Association, and preached at many other churches throughout the years.

He had a true calling to share the love of Jesus with everyone he encountered. He was a great pastor, ministering compassionately to people during difficult times of illnesses, tragedies, and deaths. Additionally, he ministered well in happier times for weddings, births, baptisms, and family celebrations. He was also very involved in community activities with the Kiwanis Club, Lions Club, Masons, and a local community theater group.

In retirement and the last years of his life, some of his favorite things to do were to work jigsaw puzzles and to play board games. He loved to listen to Gaither music and was faithful about reading his daily devotionals. He was a true fan of donuts and almost any candy or dessert. He had a great sense of humor and loved to tease and respond with one-line comebacks. He was very “literal” – a gift that all his children have inherited. He was a member of Oakland Baptist Church in Springfield and was attending Judson Baptist Church in Nashville with his daughter.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife: Nancy Krisle Tabor, and by his first-born child: Stephen “Steve” Jennings Tabor. He is survived by his five birth children: his son: Mark Tabor and wife Connie of Lawrenceville, GA, daughters: Pat Dakunchak and husband Scott of Suwanee, GA, Nancy “Nan” Goins and husband Terry of Franklin, Paula and Bill Hall of Nashville, and Sherry Tabor of Hanceville, AL, by his “adopted” daughter: Lisa Hudson of Hanceville, AL, by his daughter-in-Law: Donnia Tabor- Hanson and her husband Bob of Blaine, by his grandchildren: Cresta Tabor, Brett Tabor and wife Heather, Lauren Tabor, Ryan Tabor and wife Leslie, Jacob Goins, Hannah Goins, Graceanna Hall, and Faithlyn Hall, by his great grandchildren: Knox and Stephen Tabor, and by his step great grandchildren: Bobby and Alisha Sexton.

(Updated) LAST WEEKS OBITUARIES

Arrangements For Diana “Lady Di” Herring

Each of us have an appointment which is mandatory that we fulfill. Early on Wednesday morning, I kept the date assigned by the Creator, He welcomed me Home and now I am safe in His arms.

On February 12, 1963, I was born to the loving union of George and Frances Herring, both preceding me in death.

I received my education from the Robertson County School System, graduating from Springfield High School, Class of 1981. Immediately after, I attended Nashville State Community College in Nashville, Tennessee. My father raised his family to value work and do so to the best of our abilities. Therefore, after receiving an education, I began employment with several companies; namely Robertson County Schools (as a special education aid), Walmart, IAC, and most recently, Lowes Distribution Center. Gardening, fashion, Goodwill shopping (and shopping in general), TSU football games, and yard selling were some of the activities that were near and dear to my heart. When the chances were presented to take part in these, I did so enthusiastically. Although those past times gave me great joy, they could not compare to the love I had for my family and friends. Those closest to me were special and made my life complete.

Preceding me in death were my parents, whom I loved so dearly, George and Frances Herring; my twin brother, Daryl Glenn; older brother, George Jr., my very special first cousin and friend, Tracy Davis Storey and her mother, Gloria; special friend, Kimberly Dawn Holmes, and aunts and uncles.

Though illness inflicted me for some time, it did not hinder me. I owe all to God, who was the Head of my life for His unlimited strength to endure and subsequent healing. I cannot adequately explain the love I had for family. Family was important, and I cherished the moments we spent together.

floral squareLeft to cherish those memories are: my faithful, loving, one and only baby girl, April Darnelle of Springfield, TN; oldest brother, Michael (Connie) of Dacula, GA; sister, Carolyn of Springfield, TN: and brothers, James Curtis of Hendersonville, TN and Herbert (Melony) of Springfield, TN; my nieces and nephews whom I loved intensively: Cicely, Brandon, Desiree, Jordan, Joshua, Mykel, Aracely, Brandon Jr., and Kydon all of Springfield, TN, Cherie of Atlanta, GA and Trent and Evan of Phoenix, AZ; my only remaining aunt, Rosemary Hyde of Springfield, TN; very special, James Jr., Deborah, Donna Sue, Christopher, and all cousins. Special friends whom I knew for years and made life sweet were: Jewel Jemison, Floyd Jones Jr., Freida Butler, and Ira Antonio (Tony) Ward. “Hallelujah the race is run, eternal life is gained. My happiness has just begun, the Crown of life obtained!”

Viewing And Visitation was held Sunday, November 24, 2019 1:00pm-3:00pm.

Funeral followed At 3:00pm All At Greater Whites Chapel CME Church with Reverand Donna Hyde, Eulogist and Pastor Susan Sawyer, Officiant.

Home Fire Displaces Family Just 2 Days Before Thanksgiving

COOPERTOWN TENNESSEE: (Smokey Barn News) – A Coopertown area home sustained heavy damage and is likely a total loss after a fire tore through the home just two days before Thanksgiving.

The home is located in the 3000 block of Sandy Springs Rd just outside Coopertown but carries a Cedar Hill address. MAP

According to Chief PJ Duncan with the Pleasant View Volunteer Fire Department, firefighters from Pleasant View, Adams and White House Community Volunteer Fire Department put in a great effort and saved much of the contents but the home itself will likely be classified as a total loss.

According to Chief Duncan, the fire was likely started by a heat lamp on the back deck of the home. The lamp ignited the deck and facade of the home and then made its way into the attic and took off.

Sponsored

Chief Duncan told Smokey Barn News that supporting that theory was the 911 log. A passer-by saw that the top of the home was on fire around 2 pm and called 911. Moments later the home’s fire alarm automatically alerted first responders. Chief Duncan believes that the minutes between the two calls was the time it took the fire to move from the attic down into the living space of the home where the fire triggered the home’s fire alarm.

No one was home at the time of the fire and no injuries have been reported.

The Robertson County Emergency Management Agency put the family in contact with the American Red Cross.

The Pleasant View Volunteer Fire Department, the Adams Fire Department, the White House Community Volunteer Fire Department, the Robertson County Emergency Management Agency, Robertson County EMSa and the Coopertown Police Department all responded to the scene.

If the family reaches out to us with any needs that they have, we will bring it to you.

Holiday Traffic Advisory After Fire Engine Sideswiped In Route To Crash

ROBERTSON COUNTY: (Smokey Barn News) – According to officials in Robertson County, on Wednesday the interstates were jam-packed with drivers in a hurry to get to Thanksgiving dinners, and as a result, there were many accidents.

Smokey Barn News has been tracking Robertson County roads including the Interstates and there has been an increase of accidents and deer strikes in the last 48 hours.

Wednesday afternoon first responders with the White House Community Volunteer Fire Department were in route to an accident on I65. According to the agency, as they approached the New Hall Rd overpass they were sideswiped by a pickup.

Firefighters were forced to pull over and deal with the accident. The Millersville Fire Department stepped in to assist. Fortunately, the damage to both vehicles was relatively minor and the engine was placed back into service.

I65 and I24 are major arteries used by hundreds of thousands of drivers on the holidays. Chief Wakefield with the White House Community Volunteer Fire Department defined I65 as a big mess Wednesday. For local residents, navigating around the interstates over the holiday weekend might just save you a headache.

As far as deer strikes, Smokey Barn News spoke with Lieutenant Bill Miller with the Tennessee Highway Patrol. Miller says the best thing you can do during the rutting season is to “slow down.” Miller says drivers should scan the road up ahead and when driving at night look for the deer’s eyes to reflect your headlights.

Deer have eyes designed to reflect light back and forth. It gives their eyes more chances to capture light in low-light conditions. Cats and dogs have the same design. The design makes their eyes light up with your headlights. If you see two shiny dots up ahead->slow down.

Miller also says that if a deer does jump in front of your vehicle, do not swerve. It’s better to hit the deer, swerving can send your vehicle out of control. Miller adds, if you see one deer, there’s probably more.

Research shows that you gain nothing from speeding. For example, speeding for 30 miles on your way to mom’s house for that Turkey dinner and you might save one or two minutes. If the THP spots you speeding you can toss that two minutes out the window.
