The Robertson County Fair Association is a non-profit organization that is completely self-supporting and is run solely by volunteers. Since its establishment in 1938, the Robertson County Fair Association has celebrated all things Robertson County by promoting agriculture, education, and community involvement through quality entertainment in a family-friendly environment.

As a non-profit organization, the Fair Association serves as an advocate for the community through its commitment to preserving the fairgrounds, continuing our annual county fair, as well as providing a variety of entertainment and programs through our many other events.

On that note, they would like to remind everyone that the Robertson County Fair is not just the carnival rides. The Robertson County Fair is everything including the carnival. It’s the arena events, the entertainment at the stage, all the entries from locals (i.e. Baking, crafts, art, photography, canning, tobacco, etc…). It’s about our community coming together. It’s about the 4-H, FFA and FCCLA kids being proud of the work they have done and showcasing the items and animals they have worked hard at creating or raising. So please stop in the Main Exhibit Building and check out all their hard work, they would really appreciate it. Check out all the agricultural events listed below

Payne Chevrolet: A Brief Look At Over 90 Years In Robertson County

Payne Chevrolet: A Brief Look At Over 90 Years In Robertson County

ROBERTSON COUNTY TENNESSEE: (Smokey Barn News) – Payne Chevrolet has been a staple in Springfield, Tennessee since 1926, enduring the Great Depression and thriving throughout the years in three different locations in Robertson County. Regardless of their location, the care and support they feed back into the community have been the same since their beginning. “Our first location was established in 1926 in downtown Springfield, TN on Main Street,” said Alex Payne, and great-grandson of Byram Payne who is currently acting as the firm’s Digital Marketing Manager. “This is where the current playground/parking lot is for Springfield Baptist Church. The lot was a very tiny space, so we were only there for a few years until 1928.”

“Once a little expansion was necessary, our next location was on Locust Street, where the current Robertson County Senior Center is located. The business expanded to two different buildings, one for service and one for sales showroom and office spaces, to increase productivity. Despite the efficiency between the two buildings, the space maxed out around having 30 vehicles available at any time. So as a result of increased business, the need arose yet again for an even bigger area. So in 1969 we built a new building with more lot space and moved into our current and final location at 2807 Memorial Blvd. in Springfield, TN.

Notice the Post Office left, now the Robertson County Museum.

“Payne Chevrolet was started by Mr. Byram Payne in January of 1926. With some help from his brother Van, the two managed the business together for a few years until Byram eventually bought him out completely. Byram made it a family business and brought in his two sons to help out: Don and Bobby Payne. He was succeeded by his two sons and they managed the dealership for a number of years until Don’s sons took over.

“Currently, we are in our THIRD generation of family ownership with Jeff and David Payne at the helm. They have been co-owners and dealers since 1977 and 1985, respectively, and are continuing the family legacy. If you have relatives from Springfield, or in the neighboring towns surrounding it, you have heard about the quality care from Payne Chevrolet. We support many local schools and businesses, allowing us to pour money back into the town where we have been located for over 90 years.”

Springfield Honored With Custom Board Game

Released this month and only for sale at Walmart, it’s called (as you can see in the photo) Springfield-Opoly and it’s made by a company in Ohio called Late for the Sky Production Co. In a conversation with Smokey Barn News, the firm said the game is designed to showcase a community. Open up the game and you’ll see familiar landmarks like restaurants, city buildings, and parks.

The firm told Smokey Barn News that they have “no affiliation with Hasbro,” the makers of Monopoly,  but the game is similar. The 1924 patent expired in 1941 for “Monopoly.” That apparently opened the door for companies to make similar games.

Why Springfield? Late for the Sky said they look for cities that have shown a love for their community, a decision made by the city’s digital footprint and some market research. They have a team of about eight that do nothing but research communities.

How to win a free game!

Smokey Barn News would like to find a Springfield family to evaluate the game for us and report their findings. The first family to send an email to (UPDATE WE HAVE A WINNER SEE BELOW) “Give us the game” will win a free game. We’ll give the winning family a week to put the game to the test. We will report your thoughts on the game in a couple of weeks. The game goes for $19.95.

UPDATE: Liesa Elliott is our winner of the game. We received her email just 6 minutes after we launched the community column. Congrats Liesa! We’ll get an update from her on the game in a week or so.

Recently the Boyd Foundation announced 30 new Dog Park Dash winners across Tennessee. Established in 2018, this program is helping to make Tennessee the most pet-friendly state in America alongside other major efforts from brands such as Radio Systems Corporation, parent company of PetSafe (R). Through the Dog Park Dash, more than one hundred communities across the state of Tennessee will benefit from dog parks.

House Rep. Sabi Doc Kumar along with Mayor Barry Faulkner and friends Cross Plains Honor the legendary WSM Opry announcer Bill Cody for his 25 years at WSM Radio.

Back in late June, our very own Bill Cody with WSM was broadcasting live at the ‘Cross Plains Trash and Treasures’! We recognized him for his 25 years with WSM radio at that time! We announced that I, as his TN State Rep, on behalf of all the members of the TN House of Representatives, was presenting him a Proclamation honoring these 25 glorious years at WSM! Well, to be honest about it, the written Proclamation was not quite ready at that time! You know how government can be, and because we were on the radio, we ‘bluffed’ the Proclamation Presentation! And yes, we did it well! More fun was had than if it had been presented as we had intended! Since that day, a bit of time has passed and it has taken some work to get this group together! But, thanks to Mrs. Paula Carr, she was able to work on it and schedule a date that Bill, Mayor Barry, me and herself could be together! And, what a delightful time we had sharing stories … big time stories! Now, I am pleased to announce, our famous son of Cross Plains, and the legendary WSM Opry announcer Bill Cody has been presented the ‘real’ Proclamation honoring him for his 25 years at WSM! We thank you, sir! May God continue to Bless Bill Cody and all those that he touches through Country Talk and Music!

City of Millersville Police Dept. Increase Impaired-Driving Enforcement

The Millersville Police Department is partnering with the Tennessee Highway Safety Office (THSO) for its “Booze It and Lose It” campaign from August 16 to September 2, surrounding the Labor Day holiday. This initiative coincides with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” mobilization to increase impaired-driving enforcement nationwide.

“There will be increased enforcement efforts in residential neighborhoods, as well as on Highway 31W and Bethel Road. It’s everyone’s responsibility to have a plan to get to and from their destination and drive safely and lawfully. The primary goal of traffic enforcement is to save lives.” said Sergeant Josh Barnes.

Increased state and national messaging about the dangers of drunk driving, coupled with increased sobriety checkpoints and high visibility enforcement, aim to drastically reduce the number of drunk-driving crashes, injuries, and fatalities this year.

The consequences of a single DUI conviction for a first-time offender in the state of Tennessee may include costly fines, court costs, legal fees, jail time, mandatory drug and alcohol treatment, and/or the installation of an ignition interlock device in his/her vehicle.

The THSO provides grant funding to support The Millersville Police Department and it’s increased enforcement efforts during this Booze It and Lose It campaign. For more information about the THSO, please visit www.tntrafficsafety.org.

Robertson County Schools & Department of Education Recognizes Five District Schools As Top Tier

On Wednesday, Aug. 15, the Tennessee Department of Education released their statewide evaluation information from the 2018-2019 school year. Robertson County Schools is proud to announce that 5 district schools were designated as Reward Schools, which is the highest level of distinction a school can earn in the state. These RCS schools are:

Coopertown Middle School
Crestview Elementary School
Krisle Elementary School
White House Heritage Elementary School
White House Heritage High School

Reward schools are those that are improving overall student academic achievement and student growth for all students and for student groups, and they are identified annually.

Additionally, the district earned the distinction of “Advancing,” a higher evaluation than last year’s, “Satisfactory,” rating.

TVAAS, or Tennessee Value-Added Assessment System, scores were also released. These scores show the growth that students made based on their peers across the state and range from 1 to 5. Robertson County has improved its Overall TVAAS Score from 1 to 3. For its Literacy, the district improved from 1 to 4, and the math improved from 2 to 3.

While the district did have one ATSI (Additional Target Support and Improvement) designated school, (Springfield High School) it is important to note that this school still scored a 5 in Literacy.

Dr. Chris Causey, Director of Schools commented on the district’s achievement saying, “It is important to celebrate when the data reflects the hard work of our students, teachers, and staff. Two years ago, we were, ‘In Need of Improvement.’ We are so proud of the growth we have seen over the last couple of years, of moving up one designation level per year. As we begin the new school-year, this progress gives us a great jump-start to becoming an Exemplary school system.”

Congratulations Coopertown Middle School on being named a 2018-2019 Reward School!

We already knew we were the best but now the WHOLE state of Tennessee will know!!!!! WHOOHOOOOOO!!!!! HUGE NEWS at KRISLE this morning! We have been named a Reward School by the State Department of Education for 2018-2019. While we believe our scholars are way more than test scores, we are so proud of their hard work and accomplishments! Thankful for the families, members of the community, and Central Office staff that supports what we do every day! Last but certainly not least I truly believe that I work with the most amazing Faculty anywhere! I see the sacrifices, countless hours, love and prayers that you pour into our children every day! We are truly a FAMILY! WAHOOOOOOO SPREAD THE WORD! KRISLE IS ONE THE BEST SCHOOLS IN THE STATE OF TENNESSEE! #WeLoveKrisle #WeAreRCSTN

We are so proud of Crestview administration, teachers, staff, students and parents for working together for this achievement!

Robertson County’s United Way Delivers Schools Supplies To Family Resource Center and the Teachers Center

The United Way delivered a full-size U-Haul truck full of school supplies just a few weeks ago for Robertson County Schools students! Items were delivered to the Family Resource Center and the Teachers Center.

Thanks to the United Way, the district now has a stock of:
Glue Sticks
Scissors
Composition Books
Spiral Notebooks
Crayons (boxes of 24)
Pencils
Backpacks
…and so much more.

United Way Community Impact Manager Asailio “Ace,” Timmermeier said the district was a natural choice since the change in county United Way leadership changed.

“United Way of Metropolitan Nashville transitioned to lead operations in Robertson County in January 2019,” said Timmermeier. “One of our focus areas is education, so it made perfect sense to stream supplies from our very successful Stuff the Bus Event in Davidson County to RCS to help get the school year off to a great start.”

In all, more than 700 backpacks full of school supplies were donated. In addition, the number of glue sticks, scissors, etc. totaled more than 25,000 pieces.

Timmermeier said the donation will be an annual event that she’s excited to be a part of.

“United Way is pleased to partner with Robertson County Schools to provide extra supplies to both students and teachers,: she said. “ Your teachers are tirelessly working to educate our future, the least we can do is facilitate the supplies necessary to prepare these children to learn.”

In acknowledging the sizeable donation, Director of Schools, Dr. Chris Causey said that in his opinion, there is no need for teachers or students to purchase any of these items for this school year.

Bear Sighting # 4: Recent Trail Cam Captures Best Image So Far

Bear Sighting # 4: Recent Trail Cam Captures Best Image So Far

JOELTON TENNESSEE: (Smokey Barn News) – A trail camera near Joelton is offering us the best look so far of bear sighting number four in the Robertson County area.

According to the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency, the image was captured this weekend near Baxter Rd which sits at the bottom edge of Robertson County. MAP The photo was captured on Saturday, Aug 17, by a trail cam owned by a hunter that was monitoring deer in the area.

According to the TWRA,  there isn’t a breeding population of bears in Middle Tennessee but it is not uncommon to see young bears moving through the area looking to set up their own home range. Typically, the young males will travel long distances away from established bear populations before circling back and settling on the fringe of the existing bear population.

The first bear sighting in Robertson County was back on June 29th in Cross Plains. The bear was spotted several times near the city’s Annual Trash & Treasures event.

According to Fire Chief Tommy Jackson with the Cross Plains Fire Department, the first sighting was around South Cedar St at the four-way stop about 100 yards down. “He went (east) across to Jernigan Rd. He was spotted again on Jernigan going through a fence,” Jackson said.MAP

Chief Jackson said the bear is medium-sized and seems to be avoiding people. Three of four people reported seeing the bear. Jackson estimated that the bear wandered about 75 yards from the event. FULL STORY

Sighting number two (also on trail camera) was on July 27th in Cedar Hill. The Walker family, Lacey and Jay, (owners of Transmission Exchange in Springfield) enjoy the outdoors and set up a trail cam on their property, located on Maxey Road in Cedar Hill. MAP  The Walkers hadn’t checked the camera in a while and decided it was time to go through the photos. Most of the time the Walker’s camera captures deer and raccoons but on July 27th the camera captured something a little different, a black bear.

Officer Stratton with the Tennessee Wildlife Resource Agency (TWRA) authenticated the photo.

Sighting number three occurred just a few days later, exactly 30 days to the day after the first sighting.  A woman hit a bear with her vehicle in Cedar Hill.

The accident occurred in Cedar Hill on Turnersville Rd at 2:15 am Monday, July 29th. MAP As you can see in the photo below, the bear made claw marks in the road trying to avoid the collision.

The encounter has been confirmed by the Tennessee Wildlife Resource Agency (TWRA) with hair fibers collected at the scene. The hair fibers were sent to the TWRA’s lab and confirmed to be the hair fibers from a black bear. The Tennessee Wildlife Resource Agency has its own lab at the University Of Tennessee At Martin.

According to State Wildlife Officer Kaleb Stratton, the bear was no worse for the wear after colliding with the vehicle and ran off after the impact. The driver told officials that she swerved trying to avoid hitting the animal but the passenger side front fender and bumper made contact with the bear. A search for the bear that lasted several hours by the TWRA turned up nothing. Stratton says the impact was a glancing blow and the bear was likely not seriously injured.

We have added a sighting map below that may suggest that a bear or several bears are navigating around the more populated areas of Robertson County.

What should I do if I encounter a bear at close range?
The first rule is that you want to make your presence known by yelling and shouting at the bear in an attempt to scare it away. If a bear is reluctant to leave then proceed to throw rocks or other objects at the bear while continuing to yell. Portray yourself as the dominant animal and do not back down. If a bear is close enough that you feel uncomfortable, slowly back away, continuing to yell while watching the bear at all times. Never run from a black bear as this may trigger a natural response to chase.

Are black bears dangerous?
Black bears are normally very elusive and shy animals… and unless they have become accustomed to human food sources, they tend to avoid people. Bears are very curious animals, however, and this should not be mistaken for aggression. Prevent any conflicts by treating bears with respect as they are wild animals whose behaviors can be unpredictable.

Black bears are one of Tennessee’s state treasures and no other animal exemplifies the wilderness experience like them. They have been called a charismatic mega-fauna and for good reason – everyone from non-hunters, to hunters, to wildlife watchers – we all love bears in our own special ways. For these reasons, it is everyone’s responsibility to keep them wild and keep them alive.

He Lost His Dad, Then The Ring: “We Thought It Was Lost Forever”

RIDGETOP TENNESSEE: (Smokey Barn News) – If properly classified, this would be a “never give up story” or perhaps it’s a “story of kindness.” You be the judge.

We’re going to let the Stamper family tell the tale..

“This is a story you don’t hear of too often. My daughter MacKenzie, 10,  was at church playing in the creek (First Baptist Church Ridgetop) when she saw something that caught her eye. She bent down to carefully remove the rock and found a class ring. She ran inside and showed her father and pastor. They began to ask around to see if the ring had belonged to someone. One of the ladies saw the ring and couldn’t believe what she saw. The ring had been lost for 9 years!

“Nine years earlier, a young boy, Zack Stafford, was playing by the creek with his father’s class ring around his neck. The young boy lost his father, Brian Stafford, to a massive heart attack earlier. He wore the ring around his neck for comfort and to remember the legacy of his father. That night the ring fell off into the creek. They drained the creek to search for the ring but it was never recovered. His mom, Joyce Stafford, had given up hope that the ring would be found. Many people from the church searched with a metal detector and still couldn’t find the ring. Many years pass by, and the creek went through improvements, rock added and several floods.

“Last month, my little girl went about her morning routine before church. She slipped her shoes off to catch whatever she could get her little fingers on in the creek. She has been known to catch crawdads, frogs, and turtles and plop them down on my lap before church. However, this time she found a ring that was glistening from the sun’s reflection. After nine years of searching for a ring that was deemed lost, it had been found.

“Many tears were shed that morning at church when the young man and the ring were reunited. Now a young man and his mother remember the legacy of a man they loved and cherished so much.”

CHOICE #1

August 24th: Veterans Motorplex At The Rim – Have a chance to be able to win a ride-along in one of our race cars!

It is with regret that we have to announce to our fans and racing family that The Pro Am Truck Series has chosen to cancel their part of this weeks events at Veterans Motorplex. Veterans Motorplex is the only middle Tennessee Asphalt Racing facility that features Racing EVERY ‪Saturday night‬ for the enjoyment of our fans and these schedules are laid out months in advance.

Springfield 8th Grader Answers Science Question- Wins Dinner…

Eighth-grade student Landon Roberts who attends Springfield Middle School poses with his mother Brittany Winston at the Depot Bar and Grill on Thursday. Landon won a dinner at the Depot for being the first one to answer Smokey’s science question about the moon. The question had to do with why the dark side of the moon was still visible which happens only occasionally during a crescent moon.

Brandon’s answer was “it is Earth shining on the moon“ which is correct. During certain phases of the moon’s orbit around the earth sunlight reflects off the earth and illuminates the dark side (or back of the moon) during its crescent phase. Congratulations again Landon and we hope you enjoyed your dinner at the Depot.

(Portland, Tn) Letter To the Editor:

Whenever something bad happens such as gun violence, the cry goes out for the government to do something. The truth is, people always look in all the wrong places for answers. Many people will say it’s “the system.”

Laws and Police can never replace these restraints on personal conduct so as to produce a civilized society. The more uncivilized we become the more laws that are needed to regulate behavior. But, it is moral values, not government regulations that make for a civilized society.

We have kicked God out of society and rejected His Word, the Bible. What’s wrong with the Bible? It hasn’t hurt anyone. Its good news. The Bible gives us guidance to live by, teaches us morality and how to love one another. Remember the golden rule? Remember the ten commandments?

We have replaced God with the devil into every area of life. Morals is now a thing of the past, which delights the devil.

All violence is pure evil. The Bible says in John 10:10 that, The devil’s purpose is to steal and kill and destroy, but Jesus’ purpose is to give a satisfying life.

Crime begins and it ends in the human heart. This is a place where the secular worldview and the biblical worldview come into sharp conflict. Biblical worldview includes original sin, the Fall, and human depravity. The human heart is desperately wicked, the Bible tells us. So when we see Violence and lawlessness, we have to point out the gruesome truth: Sin is in us. Because if a society fails to understand this, it simply preserves the horrors.

We are reaching a time when you must make a choice. There’s no government or laws that are going to save us. This is bigger than politics, this is bigger than culture, this is a spiritual war we are engaged in, and we need a spiritual solution. Only a Christian worldview realistically understands human sin and realistically understands that in the Bible there is an answer: redemption. And it’s God that can change the sinful heart.

America, don’t be deceived by the devil of this world, but seek and turn to God and pray for a revival.
