Robertson County Schools has been informed that the district is among 96 across the state who have been awarded part of the $3.7 million dollar Perkins Reserve Consolidated Grant to support the implementation of, “high quality career-focused programs,” in Tennessee.

Over and above the $169,000 commitment by the state for Career and Technical training, The district applied for grant-funding in the areas of career-exploration program creation and industry certification exam funds.

Supervisor of CTE Mark Gregory announced that RCS has received $35,000 for CTE equipment and $15,000 for industry certification exam fees. The equipment grant will help with initial funding for a new bio-stem lab at White House Heritage High School. The industry certification exam funds will benefit around 140 students as they test for certification in fields including: Microsoft Office Specialists, Certified Nursing Assistants, EKG technicians, and Certified Medical Assistants, among others.

Are You Safe? 911 Robertson County Response Times

ROBERTSON COUNTY TENNESSEE: (Smokey Barn News) – In the last few months, the city of Ridgetop has gone from a police force of about five officers down to zero. Following a brief legal battle, the department was reopened and two officers were hired back.  Then city leaders downsized the department to just one officer citing budgetary constraints. Shortly after that, the city’s one-and-only officer went on leave. So again, Ridgetop has no police department of its own, at least for the moment. FULL STORY

The situation in Ridgetop has turned the spotlight on the Roberton County Sheriff’s Office.  Concerned citizens in Ridgetop have on many occasions expressed that they believe that not having their own police department in the city increases response times. Is that true? It depends on several factors.

To get a look at the numbers Smokey Barn News reached out to the county for the Sheriff’s response times for Ridgetop. As a marker, we also asked for the Sheriff’s Office response times for the city of Adams. Like Ridgetop, Adams is a smaller community positioned on the outer edge of the county. Adams is also arguably more rural than ridgetop.  As an additional marker, we included Cedar Hill. We asked for a year’s worth of data. Read More…

Do You Wanna Be The Speaker?

Would you like to be the Speaker of the Tennessee House of Representatives? You may not make it, but you can certainly try! Surprisingly, the Constitution of our Great State does not list the qualifications for a Speaker of the Tennessee Legislature. Section 11, Article II states that, “ The Senate and the House of Representatives, when assembled, shall each choose a speaker and its other officers; be judges of the qualifications and election of its members..”. Constitutional scholars believe that you do not have to be a member of the Legislature to become Speaker. A member has to nominate you and it will be necessary to have a second. Then the members of the House will vote. It is expected that they will vote for one of their own!

The Speaker of a legislative assembly is a presiding officer. The title was first used in the English Parliament in 1377. Responsibilities of a Speaker are complex today, as compared to olden times when the official role was to moderate a debate, make rulings on procedural matters, announce results of votes, appear strict and be an authority on the podium. The Speaker decides who is allowed to speak on the floor of the House. This can influence debate and change outcomes on key issues. The Speaker has the privilege to discipline members who defy decorum and procedures of the chamber. The Speaker represents the legislative body in celebrations and ceremonies.

The Speaker also has major administrative responsibilities. He manages the office, House and legislative staff. The Speaker decides the number and structure of House committees. Most importantly, he appoints members to these committees. It is expected that the members will serve on committees where their professional and life experiences will be of value in making laws and decisions. The Speaker can influence outcomes on important societal matters through the members he appoints. Generally, members are expected to vote their ‘district’, i.e. they vote according to the preferences and values of their constituents or vote their ‘conscience’. It is a sweet Blessing when these two are the same!

Since the Speaker is elected by members of the House of Representatives, the person, naturally, belongs to the majority party. A memorable coup occurred, in the Tennessee House of Representatives, in 2009. The Republicans were a razor-thin majority by a count of 50-49. Representative Kent Williams, a Republican, made a secret deal with Democrats to support him for Speakership. With the vote tied at 49-49, he cast the tie-breaking vote to become the Speaker himself. The shocked Republicans expelled him from their Party but he was the Speaker!

It was not as dramatic, but on Wednesday, July 24, 2019, the Republican Caucus of Tennessee House of Representatives met to name a Speaker-elect to replace the current Speaker, Glen Casada. There is sadness in this matter. Speaker Casada accomplished a great deal as he presided over the House session this year. Important legislation, that will improve the lives and well-being of Tennesseans, was passed. However, personal indiscretions and possible irregularities led to the need for his resignation as he lost the confidence of our members.

Fortunately, we have a deep bench of dedicated and capable members willing to serve. Six of the members offered themselves for service. After four rounds of voting, we nominated Chairman Cameron Sexton of Crossville. Linda and I have known Cameron and his family. I am certain that he will restore the integrity and independence of our members. Speaker Sexton has strong moral values and principles. Let us wish the very best for him and his family. His success will also be a success for Tennessee! God Bless!

The Robertson County Schools Homeless Liaison along with a comprehensive group of community leaders involved in homeless ministries select a family to be awarded the new home.

Church members, volunteers and many local sponsors helped to build this brand new 1200 sq ft home in less than one week. A single mom and her two small children were the chosen recipients of this year’s home located on Woodland St. Springfield.

Robertson County is one of the few counties that does not have a homeless shelter and very few resources in place to assist those in need. Unfortunate scenarios that families encounter will often leave them on a downward spiral with a lack of means to get back on their feet. Currently, Robertson County has 352 homeless children in the school system according to the McKinney Vento Act. Aside from these, an additional 27 people were identified in the community per the annual “Point-In-Time” count that took place in January 2019. Thankfully, with the collaborative efforts of our county’s new ministries such as My Father’s House, Stepping Stones, and Christmas in July, we are in a strong position to turn around and change the lives of the disadvantaged individuals in our community.

The process of building a home in only a week transpires through the partnership of many organizations, contractors, churches, businesses, and hundreds of individual volunteers. The Christmas in July project would not be possible without the Lord working in and through each and every entity involved.

A Letter to the Editor from Portland, Tennessee

The news media seems to always report racial division amongst the American people. It appears to be instigated by anti-America groups whose agenda is to tear apart this nation.

I recently learned that the word “racist” was a made up word invented by the communists in the 1930’s to foster division in America.

Racism is the most common form of prejudice today, But, nowhere in the Bible will you find the word “race” used to described the division of mankind. We may vary according to our nationality, land, language or family, but we are a single race, human.

The Bible describes all human beings as being of “one blood” (Acts 17:26). This emphasizes that we are all related, descendants from the first man, Adam, and the mother of all living, Eve.

This Biblical teaching was confirmed when scientists mapped the human genome around the year 2000. They confirmed that genetically we’re all one race.

We’re all different shades of God’s creation. All have been made in the image of God. (Genesis 1:27).

We all have a brown pigment in our skin called melanin. This is what makes us the shade of color that we are. Some people have a lot of melanin and they would be very dark; some people don’t have as much melanin, they would be lighter. We all do have the same type of skin color, it is just that the amount of melanin (brown color) differs from person to person. Actuality, no human really is “black” or “white.” There are not different colors but different shades of one basic color, brown

The color of your skin is simply containers in which the real you rides around in. Your skin color has nothing to do with what kind of person you become.

I pray that we all stop judging by skin color, but instead look at the content of one’s character. We all belong to one race, the human race, equal in value before God our Creator.

(White House, TN) August 3rd: Carnival To Benefit Shipping Costs For Operation Christmas Child – Bethlehem Baptist Church

Over the years Bethlehem Baptist Church has been heavily involved in Samaritan’s Purse’s Operation Christmas Child. They sent over 1000 shoe boxes last year and are sending 1350 this year. The shipping cost starts to get expensive and this year it’s projected to be around 13,000 dollars. These shoe boxes are shipped all over the world and bless kids in rural areas where they otherwise may never get gifts or receive the message of Christ.

To raise money for the shipping cost Bethlehem Baptist Church will be having a Carnival on the Hill fundraiser. This event will offer games, food and fun for families in the community. Tickets will be sold at the event that will be redeemable for the rides, jump houses, food and games. One hundred percent of the proceeds will be used to ship the shoe boxes. See FULL Flyer

A message from Coopertown Police Department – Have you looked to see if your proof of insurance is current or expired?

Tennessee law requires drivers to carry and exhibit proof of insurance when involved in an accident or when stopped for a traffic violation.

Without proof of insurance, you could be charged with violation of the financial responsibility law and your vehicle could be towed. Acceptable forms of proof of insurance can be in either electronic or paper format and must either be a declaration page or proof of insurance card.

While an electronic format is acceptable, consider the reliability of your cell phone service in the event you’re somewhere with no signal. (T.C.A 55-12-139)

White House Man Followed Home, Robbed At Gunpoint (VIDEO)

WHITE HOUSE TENNESSEE: (Smokey Barn News) – A White House man was robbed at gunpoint in his own driveway Saturday afternoon in broad daylight and it was all captured on video.

The White House Police Department is asking the public for assistance identifying the two suspects.

The incident occurred Saturday afternoon around 6:30 pm when the victim left his home on Highland Dr to get some cigarettes and a lottery ticket at the Super Stop Market located on Hwy 31 W. MAP Police told Smokey Barn News that they believe the two suspects spotted the victim at the Super Stop Market and followed him home.

As you can see in the video above, the suspect’s vehicle, described as possibly a gray Ford Focus, can clearly be seen following the victim on several cameras around the city. After arriving home, the suspects got out of their vehicle and asked the victim for directions to Nashville. Moments later the two men pulled out a black semi-automatic pistol and pointed it at him. The victim was then bear-hugged by one suspect while the other suspect searched his pockets.

At some point during the robbery, the victim, in his mid 60’s, grabbed the gun but the weapon did not discharge and no injuries were reported.

The suspects are described as two black males, the first suspect (with the gun) is about 5’8, 150 lbs., early 20s, wearing a black hoodie. The second suspect is described 6’0 200 lbs., early 20s wearing beige shorts and a white T-shirt.

After the robbery, the two men headed towards Hwy 31 W. Local authorities were alerted but the suspects escaped.

The White House Police Department is searching for these two men. If you have any information about the suspects, this crime or the vehicle you are encouraged to contact Detective Sergeant Hunter or Detective Ward at the White House Police Department at 615-672-4903

White House Police Chief Pat Brady, told Smokey Barn News that detectives and officers have been working all night trying to develop leads in this case. “We appreciate the citizens that have come forward with video and other information.

“Even though we’ve had robberies in the past, we can’t remember when we’ve had one quite like this when a citizen is robbed right in their own driveway. In my 23 years in law enforcement, this is a first in White House that a citizen has been robbed in their own driveway, that I can remember.”

Law Enforcement Use Buses To Spot Texting Drivers

CLARKSVILLE TENNESSEE: (Smokey Barn News) – Last Tuesday the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office, Clarksville Police Department, and the Tennessee Highway Patrol (THP) conducted a bus tour to increase awareness of the new Hands-Free Tennessee law.

A “bus tour” (in this case) refers to a bus filled with law enforcement officers that are looking for distracted drivers and traffic violations. The bus provides elevated seating which offers a clear view inside passing vehicles.

Last May the Tennessee Highway Patrol brought their great big heavily marked bus to Roberson County looking for distracted drivers. If nothing else, the bus looks like a gigantic police car on steroids. However distracted drivers are completely oblivious to the bus. VIDEO REPORT

According to Travis Platzor with the Tennessee Highway Patrol, the purpose of using the oversized heavily marked bus is to show how unaware distracted drivers are.  To get ticketed they had to miss the big bus and all the officers swarming around it like a beehive. The THP’s clever idea made it all the way to the Wall Street Journal.  FULL STORY

Distracted drivers in Clarksville were not so lucky last Tuesday. Instead of using a heavily marked bus on steroids, authorities used a plain yellow school bus. For distracted drivers, there was nowhere to hide. Authorities were not without mercy, this time it was just a warning. Ticketing will officially start on Labor Day, September 2nd. The point is not to write tickets, it’s to change behavior and save lives, according to Sandra Brandon, Public Information Officer with the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office.

“Our goal was to increase driver awareness of the new Hands-Free Tennessee law,” Brandon said.  “We want to remind drivers that the slightest distraction from a cell phone could lead to a traffic crash that kills or injures a pedestrian, construction worker, or fellow driver.”

In Clarksville last week, fifty-seven citations were issued for traffic violations, with seventeen warning citations issued for violation of the Hands-Free Tennessee law.

If you are not familiar with the new cell phone law or you would just like a refresher on the new law, click here or watch the video below.

Though they have no constitutional obligation to tell us, Smokey Barn News reached out to local law enforcement to see if they had a date for the next texting sweep in Roberton County but no date was available.

Whether it’s a school bus, church van or bus on steroids, drivers have two choices, look up and wave or sign on the dotted line.

Kaila Sewell Browning Becomes Robertson County’s First Female Criminal Prosecutor

ROBERTSON COUNTY TENNESSEE: (Smokey Barn News) –Kaila Browning of Joelton was sworn-in today as Robertson County’s first female criminal prosecutor.

Browning (pictured) was sworn in by District Attorney John Carney and Circuit Judge Jill Ayres at 9 AM this morning.

Kaila Sewell Browning was raised in Joelton, Tennessee and attended Davidson Academy through high school. She matriculated to Austin Peay State University where she received a Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science. She continued her education at Belmont University College of Law. Prior to law school, she worked as an office manager at a Nashville law firm for three years. During and after her law program, she worked at the Robertson County DA’s office as an intern.

“We are honored to have her join our office. She has seen the criminal law from both sides….the defense and the prosecution, and she chose to be allied with the law enforcement side,” said Deputy District Attorney General, Dent Morris.

“I am absolutely thrilled to be the newest member of the Office of the District Attorney here in Robertson County and to be the first woman to serve as a prosecuting attorney for this office,” Browning told Smokey Barn News Thursday afternoon. After having spent a number of years here as an intern, I have no doubts that I will be able to serve our community effectively and to uphold the constitution of the Great State of Tennessee.”

Facebook Ad Lands Alleged Tailgate Bandit Behind Bars

WHITE HOUSE: (Smokey Barn News) – A stolen tailgate appears in a Facebook ad just hours after authorities are notified of the theft. Within just 4 hours a man is in custody and the tailgate is returned to its owners.

It started when Rebecca and Antoine Eddings of White House posted their truck for sale on Facebook and (for added measure) the truck was parked out by the road with a for sale sign. By morning the truck’s tailgate was gone.

After parking the truck out by the road Wednesday night the Eddings’ came inside and went to bed. When morning arrived it was Mr. Eddings that would make the discovery that the tailgate of his 2014 Chevrolet Silverado had been stolen right from his own front lawn.

The Eddings’ estimated the tailgates value at about $1500 due to it having a backup camera. The couple told police they had no idea who could have taken the tailgate.

Sponsored Ad Injury Law

Rebecca and Antoine did report the theft to authorities but they told Smokey Barn News that they had little hope of ever seeing the tailgate again.

“We thought the tailgate was gone forever,” said Mrs. Eddings. But on the off chance that it could be found, she posted about the theft on her Facebook page and shared it on Hip White House.

Within minutes of her post, Rebecca received many messages, including one from an anonymous good samaritan on Instant Messanger that said: “call me.”  He was pretty sure he had seen the tailgate listed for $275 on Facebook Marketplace.

The silver tailgate with the gold Chevrolet emblem under the handle and a walker dealer sticker made the tailgate easy for the Eddings’ to identify and they knew they had a match.

The Robertson County Sheriff’s Office leaped into action and obtained the location of the alleged seller, now identified as Youree Jones, 31, of Hendersonville, in Gallatin, according to the incident report obtained by Smokey Barn News. The Gallatin Police Department was advised and a meeting was arranged to see the tailgate. According to the report, when police arrived and questioned Mr. Jones he said that he was driving through White House and noticed the truck for sale.  Jones said he had a buddy who needed a tailgate and he was going to give it to him. Mr. Jones then told police that he put the tailgate up for sale on Facebook, the report stated.

The total elapsed time from reporting the theft to the recovery of the tailgate? About 4 hours. It was all over before lunchtime. The tailgate has since been reinstalled on the truck that is once again for sale. Want to buy it? Here’s the link.

To the anonymous good samaritan that reported the ad, the Eddings said: “We very much appreciate his help.”

To Deputy James Rippy and the Robertson County Sheriff’s Department, “We greatly appreciate all their hard work quickly responding to our property theft and recovering our tailgate.”

Youree Jones, 31, of Hendersonville has been charged with Theft-Of-Property-Over-$1,000 and taken into custody. He was transported to the Robertson County Detention Facility in Springfield under a $3,500 bond.

Robertson Co Schools – Inspiring Teachers & Making An Impact On Students lives

The Robertson County School’s Federal Programs department work to offer relevant and engaging professional development opportunities for Robertson County School’s teaching staff. Last Friday Inky Johnson was invited to speak about the impact teachers can have on our students’ lives. #WeAreRCSTN

WHO IS INKY?

In Inky Johnson’s own words…

“September 9, 2006. It started as a normal college football game in Neyland Stadium. If anything, the event was an afterthought, dropped into the schedule at the last minute.

For Inky Johnson, though, the game changed everything. A routine tackle turned into a life-threatening injury, and nothing has been normal for Inky ever since. Not with a paralyzed right arm. Not with daily pain. Not with constant physical challenges.

His dream had always been to play professional sports. You might think his injury would have destroyed his motivation and crushed his spirit. But that’s only because you don’t know Inky.

Who is Inquoris “Inky” Johnson? He could be described as the survivor of an underprivileged past. He could be described as a refugee of poverty and violence. He could be described as a success story stained by tragedy. But if you look deeper, you’ll discover something else.

You’ll see a man who looks in the face of defeat and says, “Am I really failing, or is God prevailing?” You’ll see a man gripped by the promise that God has purposes and plans far beyond our own. And you’ll be inspired by his relentless determination, which he loves to impart to others through his dramatic story.

Inky has a master’s degree in sports psychology from the University of Tennessee. He devotes much of his time to mentoring athletes and underprivileged youth. He and his amazing wife Allison live in Atlanta, Georgia with their beautiful children, Jada and Inky Jr.

MOTIVATION OR INSPIRATION?
“Motivation” is often nothing more than forcing people to do something they don’t really want to do. In contrast, inspiration affects people from within, giving them the ability to accomplish what would otherwise be impossible. Through his walk and his talk, Inky embodies and imparts a truly inspirational message.”

Some great songs like, ‘Glory Hallelujah, ‘The Battle Hymn of the Republic’ and ‘Dixie Land’ depicting our history, throughout the years, were played by the Inglewood Old Time Stringband and enjoyed by all! — with Paul Hart at Robertson County History Museum.

You know, we think this is what the classroom looked like, back in the ‘Olden Days,’ we tell our little ones! But, honestly people, in my elementary school days, I very much knew, first hand, what a chalkboard tablet was used for! In fact, it was a daily evening chore to clean it so that it would be ready for lessons the next school day! For real, no kidding! — at Robertson County History Museum.

On that note, they would like to remind everyone that the Robertson County Fair is not just the carnival rides. The Robertson County Fair is everything including the carnival. It’s the arena events, the entertainment at the stage, all the entries from locals (i.e. Baking, crafts, art, photography, canning, tobacco, etc…). It’s about our community coming together. White House Man Dies In Deadly Hwy 31 Crash

ROBERTSON COUNTY TENNESSEE: (Smokey Barn News) – A White House man has died and his father is in the hospital this evening following a deadly crash on Hwy 31W Tuesday.

The accident occurred around 12:30 pm Tuesday afternoon in the 3600 block of Hwy 31W. MAP

According to Sergeant Joel Brisson with the White House Police Department, the vehicle, a 2001 Chevrolet Blazer, was traveling south on Hwy 31 W, when for reasons unknown, the driver, now identified as 63-year-old George Miguel Oliver of White House, veered across oncoming northbound traffic and continued over the shoulder, off the roadway, and impacted a tree with tremendous force.

63-year-old George Oliver Jr., did not survive the crash. His father, 87 George Westly Oliver, also of White House, was injured but is expected to recover. George Sr. was trapped in the vehicle after the crash and was extricated by the White House Fire Department.

The crash occurred near the Robertson/Sumner County line so agencies from both counties responded. Continued below…

George Miguel Oliver “Mike” worked at the White House Walmart.

Employees tell Smokey Barn News that “Mike” was a dedicated worker, very likable and very shy.  Friends say that Mike and his father were having a really hard time in life and Mike took care of his father George Sr. According to Walmart staff, the two were living out of their vehicle and the George Sr. would wait for his son until his shift was over.

Employees and Walmart management had been reaching out to try and improve circumstances for the two.  Employees would pull Geroge Sr. inside on hot days and even paid for the George Jr. “Mike” to get a haircut. “We were all just doing what we could all afford to do,” said an acquaintance of the two men. “Our fear now is that the father may be homeless.”

White House Police, White House Fire Department, Robertson County EMS. the Robertson County Sheriff’s Office and Sumner County EMS all responded to the crash.

If you would like to reach out to George Sr. with assistance, Smokey Barn News is in communication with co-workers and friends, as soon as a collection center has been established, we will bring it to you. Refresh this page for updates.

Have you been to the Rim Lately? We’ve Made Some Big Changes

‎ROBERTSON COUNTY TENNESSEE: (Smokey Barn News) – Longtime Robertson County citizen and businessman Jerry Criswell and his family announced an ownership change for Highland Rim Speedway back in March. Roger Cunningham, Criswell’s former business partner, sold his portion of the speedway to Criswell. The Criswell family are now the sole owners of the historic facility.

The Rim provides an excellent evening of entertainment for the entire family and now offers fans a close up look at drivers and their machines with meet-and-greets and autograph signings.

With the new ownership now in place, the historic facility was renamed for the 2019 Racing Season. Criswell grew up around The Rim and changing the track’s name was a very hard decision. The new name is Veterans Motorplex at The Rim.

Sponsored Ad

Criswell stated that he wanted to keep some of the original name in honor of everyone that had made this such a great facility in the past. “For 40 plus years this place has been known as The Rim to me personally and that is why this new name is special to me”. The new name provides a fresh start to a new era of racing at the speedway while still preserving some of the historic past. A lot of families have grown up at this place knowing it as “The Rim” and now with the new name they’ll feel right at home every Saturday night.

According to Criswell, “We have a lot of Veterans that support our facility on a weekly basis and this is just another way we have chosen to recognize them by renaming this facility after them. Criswell a veteran himself states our servicemen and women pay a huge debt every day for the freedoms we enjoy as Americans and many times they are forgotten as Veterans. Those same freedoms they provided allows us the opportunity to enjoy the sport of Stock Car Racing and during the racing season we plan to recognize our Veterans in attendance on a regular basis.”

Bear Hit By Car In Robertson County

Bear Hit By Car In Robertson County

CEDAR HILL/ADAMS TENNESSEE: (Smokey Barn News) – Back in June numerous witnesses reported seeing a black bear in Robertson County.  The bear was spotted near the Annual Trash & Treasures event in Cross Plains. FULL STORY Now we have a second sighting by a Springfield woman that actually hit a bear with her vehicle.

The encounter has been confirmed by the Tennessee Wildlife Resource Agency (TWRA) with hair fibers collected at the scene. The hair fibers were sent to the TWRA’s lab and confirmed to be the hair fibers from a black bear. The Tennessee Wildlife Resource Agency has its own lab at the University Of Tennessee At Martin.

According to State Wildlife Officer Kaleb Stratton, the bear was no worse for the wear after colliding with the vehicle and ran off after the impact. The driver told officials that she swerved trying to avoid hitting the animal but the passenger side front fender and bumper made contact with the bear. A search for the bear that lasted several hours by the TWRA turned up nothing. Stratton says the impact was a glancing blow and the bear was likely not seriously injured.

Sponsored Ad

The accident occurred at 2:15 am Monday, July 29th MAP As you can see in the photos below, the bear made claw marks in the road trying to avoid the collision.

According to Stratton, this time of year younger bears are starting to travel after being pushed out by larger bears. Stratton says the bears are likely coming out of Kentucky just passing through as they search for territory and other bears. “They’re not here to stay, they’re just passing through,” Stratton said.”  Black bears are both very territorial and social, Stratton says.

One of the biggest questions Stratton gets after a bear sighting is: “What are you going to do about it?” Stratton says, “We’re not going to do a thing about it unless the bear is getting into trash cans, pet food or trying to get into cars.” In that case, Stratton says they would step in and trap the animal. The bear would then be relocated to Kentucky or East Tennessee.

Sponsored Ad

So far, according to Stratton, there have been no calls about bear issues in Robertson County. Stratton says citizens (in the Adams/Cedar Hill area) should try not to leave pet food and trash outside. Bears love dog and cat food and they can smell it.  When a bear develops a taste for human or pet food they can become a problem and ultimately have to be relocated.

What should I do if I encounter a bear at close range?
The first rule is that you want to make your presence known by yelling and shouting at the bear in an attempt to scare it away. If a bear is reluctant to leave then proceed to throw rocks or other objects at the bear while continuing to yell. Portray yourself as the dominant animal and do not back down. If a bear is close enough that you feel uncomfortable, slowly back away, continuing to yell while watching the bear at all times. Never run from a black bear as this may trigger a natural response to chase.

Are black bears dangerous?
Black bears are normally very elusive and shy animals… and unless they have become accustomed to human food sources, they tend to avoid people. Bears are very curious animals, however, and this should not be mistaken for aggression. Prevent any conflicts by treating bears with respect as they are wild animals whose behaviors can be unpredictable.

Black bears are one of Tennessee’s state treasures and no other animal exemplifies the wilderness experience like them. They have been called a charismatic mega-fauna and for good reason – everyone from non-hunters, to hunters, to wildlife watchers – we all love bears in our own special ways. For these reasons, it is everyone’s responsibility to keep them wild and keep them alive.

White House, TN (July 31, 2019) …On the heels of an exciting and successful 2018 event, White House On Fire (WHOF) returns Saturday, Oct. 5, 2019, with an even bigger stage, bigger venue, bigger lineup, and overall bigger event. WHOF 2019 will be held at the W.L. ANDERSON SOCCER COMPLEX, located at 2760 Old Hwy 31 in White House, TN.

Gates Open at 11 am. Music begins at 12 noon and concludes at 11 pm with a newly added fireworks display to wrap up the all-day and night festivities.

This year’s fundraiser event culminates with the same great Rocktober Celebration concert as last year with a 70’s-rock tribute show by the Classic Rock Allstars, and the ultimate 80’s hairband tribute show by Hollywood Blvd.

Country Music has been added this year as daytime entertainment with a variety of performers on the schedule. With the common theme intact from last year, guest performers and surprises will be included in various performances throughout the event. Confirmed in attendance so far are members from Winger, Tesla, Vixen, Ted Nugent, Florida Georgia Line, Blake Shelton and The Voice TV show, with more special guests to be announced.

“We are thrilled with the overwhelming response, again this year,” says Founder and Co-Producer, Brion Gamboa. “Our music friends have come together in an amazing way, to help us raise funds for our local Volunteer Firefighters. We are so excited to not only support our community but also help promote awareness and salutes to our heroes.”

Co-Producer, Brian Bayley adds, “It was a proud moment to be able to hand over a donation check last year. And with an even bigger event, we are looking forward to handing over an even bigger check this year. With so much crime, corruption and hostility in the news these days, we are proud to be able to produce a positive event where the community can band together and support those that support them. It’s an all-day, all-star music festival as the impetus, and we look forward to the audience having a great, safe, and fun time!”

“With the cancellation of the October 5th Kid Rock Fish Fry, we even added a Kid Rock impersonator,” state the producers. “That was a big weekend for those fans too, and now they still have an outlet, for a night of music they were already planning!”

General Admission ticket’s go on sale now. Sponsorship, vendor, volunteer and general donation opportunities available as well. Click here for vendor application

Guests should bring their lawn chairs and blankets for the event’s outdoor lawn seating. Concessions will be available on-site. No coolers allowed.

Third Bear Sighting In Robertson County (Captured on Trail-Cam)

CEDAR HILL TENNESSEE: (Smokey Barn News) – Bear captured on a trail-cam makes third sighting in a month in Robertson County. The photo was taken less than a mile from the site that a black bear was hit by a car just two days earlier.

The Walker family, Lacey and Jay, (owners of Transmission Exchange in Springfield) enjoy the outdoors and set up a trail cam on their property, located on Maxey Road in Cedar Hill. MAP This afternoon the Walkers realized they hadn’t checked the camera in a while. Most of the time the Walker’s camera captures deer and raccoons but on July 27th the camera captured something a little different, a black bear.

Officer Stratton with the Tennessee Wildlife Resource Agency (TWRA) has authenticated the photo and he will be examining the site.

That makes two confirmed sightings and one unconfirmed sighting in a month. The first sighting was back on June 29th. A black bear was spotted by several witnesses in Cross Plains near the city’s Annual Trash & Treasures event. FULL STORY

The second sighting was in Cedar Hill on July 29th, just two days after the Walker’s trail-cam captured the photo above.  A Springfield woman hit a bear with her car. The bear survived the encounter and wandered off. Officer Stratton, investigated the incident and told Smokey Barn News that (based on the evidence) the bear was probably not seriously injured after being hit by the car.  FULL STORY & PHOTOS

“The trail camera picture appears to show a black bear in the area where one was hit by a vehicle in the early morning hours of Monday, July 29, 2019, Officer Stratton said. “If the date and time on the camera is correct, it was taken about 2 days before the bear was struck by the vehicle on Turnersville Road.

“We would like anyone with pictures of the bear to send them to us if you have them. We believe the bear to be alive and well but would love to see some pictures taken after Monday, July 29, 2019.”
