Robertson Man Sentenced To Life For Springfield Murder

SPRINGFIELD TENNESSEE: (Smokey Barn News) – After 50 years, Tevin “Turk” Harris of Springfield, will be eligible for parole following a mandatory sentence of life in prison after being found guilty of First-Degree-Murder for the death of Ronald “Jolly” Chatman in 2013.

Ron ChatmanBoth the prosecution and the defense waived a jury trial which set the stage for Judge Ayers to decide the case last Tuesday.  The verdict, guilty, the sentence, life in prison with the possibility of parole in 50 years. With time served, it will be 2063 before Harris will see his first parole hearing.

Back on May 2, 2013, Chatman was found shot in a vehicle on South Main St across from the Stop One Market in Springfield. MAP

When officers arrived, Chatman was found inside of his vehicle deceased. Officials told Smokey Barn News that  Chatman appeared to have bullet wounds to his upper body. Below is Smokey’s video report from that evening. Original Story

Harris is currently serving time in the shooting death of another man, Thomas Smith Jr., 27, of Springfield.

a 004Back on October 13 2013, just five months after the murder of Chatman, Springfield Police were called to 1505 Leota Street in Springfield. The call came in that a person had been shot.  When police arrived the victim (Thomas D. Smith, 27 years of age, from Springfield) was already in transit to NorthCrest  Medical Center in a personal vehicle.

Witnesses told police that Harris and Smith had been involved in an argument and Harris allegedly shot Smith. Smith died from his injuries. (Click here for Smokey’s original report)

“As we examine the murders that have occurred, it appears as though there is a small subculture of violence that places a high value on violence and Most Wantedretribution while placing a low value on human life. Changing these values requires a long-term commitment from everyone… families, friends, churches, schools, and the whole community,” said Springfield Police Chief David Thompson the day after the shooting.

After Harris was named as a suspect, the search was on to find him. The TBI placed Harris on their Most Wanted list the next day.

Just two days after the shooting on Oct. 15, Harris was arrested and charged with the murder of  Smith. Police received a tip that Harris was at a home in Springfield. Police surrounded the home but Harris refused to come out. Ultimately police used tear-gas to convince Harris to come out and he was taken into custody without further incident. (See video below from that night)

Tevin “Turk” Harris

Smokey Spoke to Police Chief David Thompson the night of Harris’s arrest,  the Chief indicated that during Harris’s arrest a gun and a cell phone were taken in as evidence. The Chief said that Harris’s gun was being put through ballistics to determine if the gun was used in any other murders.

On Monday, March 2, 2015, Mr. Harris went to trial and was found guilty of 2nd Degree Murder in the death of Smith and Unlawful Possession of a weapon. He is currently serving a 22-year sentence for those convictions. Harris’ sentences for both murders will run concurrently, making him eligible for parole in 2063 with time served.

BENEFITING NEEDLINK NASHVILLE

NASHVILLE TENNESSEE: (Smokey Barn News) –Rudolph’s Red Nose Run is music city’s most festive 5K. For more than 30 years, elves, grinches, and scores of sugar plum fairies have run, walked, and made merry in downtown Nashville, TN to light the way for the Nashville Christmas Parade.

In 2018, Parade-goers will once again be treated to antlers, tutus, and red noses passing by as they eagerly await Santa’s arrival. Thanks to the efforts of Metro police, parks, and Public Works, as well as parade host Piedmont Natural Gas, Rudolph’s very shiny race will delight crowds once again.

This frosty 5K isn’t just for fun. Runners and walkers join together in the cold to help keep their neighbors warm this winter. Proceeds benefit NeedLink Nashville, which helps nearly 2,000 local families and seniors avoid homelessness and stay connected to critical utility services every year.

Why You Should Run:
Running is good exercise after a fabulous Thanksgiving Meal!
Your family can cheer you on and you can run with Rudolph!

Teen Found Shot After Rollover Crash In Greenbrier

STORY UPDATED

GREENBRIER TENNESSEE: (Smokey Barn News) – The Robertson County Sheriff’s Office is currently investigating the shooting of a 15-year-old male following a rollover crash on Edger Dillard Rd near Greenbrier.

The shooting victim, not identified, was taken to a nearby hospital to be treated and is currently in stable condition.

Sunday evening Robertson County Deputies initially responded to a call of gunshots at a residence on Edgar Dillard Rd. Four individuals and the 15-year-old gunshot victim wrecked the vehicle they were driving (a late model Chevrolet pickup) on Edgar Dillard Rd while leaving the scene of the shooting. The four other individuals received minor injuries from the wreck.

The Robertson County Sheriff’s Office has apprehended one of two suspects in the shooting. Twenty-year-old Ashton Bolen of Greenbrier was taken into custody around 9:30 am Monday morning. Bolen is currently being held at the Robertson County Detention Facility in Springfield.

Bolen has been charged with five counts of Reckless Endangerment, five counts of Attempted Criminal Homicide and Possession of Schedule VI for Resale.

SECOND SUSPECT AT LARGE

The Robertson County Sheriff’s Office is currently searching for a second suspect. He is identified as 20-year-old Kyler Anderson, of Springfield.  Anderson (pictured) has warrants for five counts of Reckless Endangerment and five counts of Attempted Criminal Homicide.

The victims were transported to Skyline Medical Center in Nashville following the incident. One person declined treatment, officials said.

The incident occurred around 10:30 pm Sunday evening in the 4000 block of Edger Dillard Rd in Greenbrier. Though the home carries a Greenbrier address it sits outside the city limits. MAP The Robertson County Sheriff’s Office and the Tennessee Highway Patrol are investigating the incident.

The shooting victim and four occupants traveled a short distance from the site of the shooting before crashing their vehicle on Edgar Dillard Road.

After the crash, the pickup landed on its side in the front yard of a home.  Robertson County 911 emergency dispatch received several calls reporting gunfire in the area at the time of the crash, officials said.

Former Police Chief Of Cross Plains Charged With Official Misconduct

CROSS PLAINS TENNESSEE: (Smokey Barn News) – An investigation by Special Agents with the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation has resulted in the indictment of former Cross Plains Police Chief James K. Yates.

In June, at the request of 19th District Attorney General John Carney, TBI Special Agents began investigating Yates on allegations of misuse of governmental records.

During the course of the investigation, Agents developed information that between July 2016 and November 2017, while serving as chief of the Cross Plains Police Department, Yates used the Criminal Justice Portal System to make inquiries unrelated to his official duties.

The Criminal Justice Portal System is a tool used by law enforcement to research background information on citizens.

On November 14th, the Robertson County Grand Jury returned an indictment charging Yates, 36, of Cross Plains, with one count of Official Misconduct. Today, he was arrested and booked into the Robertson County Jail on a $2,500 bond.

Yates resigned his position as Police Chief for Cross Plains in March of this year.

Back in March, Yates told Smokey Barn News that he’s sorry to be leaving his position as Chief but it was just time to go. As far as the future for Yates, he didn’t want to offer specifics, other than to say at the time that he was looking at opportunities outside of police work.

Yates started his career in Cross Plains as an officer in 2009 and in 2013 was promoted to Chief. MORE

Fatal Hwy 161 Crash Takes One Life Friday Night

SPRINGFIELD TENNESSEE: Smokey Barn News – Highway 161 is currently closed following a fatal single-vehicle rollover crash just outside of Springfield.

Traffic being diverted

The crash occurred around 9:30 PM Friday evening in the 5000 block of Highway 161 (MAP) and it will likely be an hour or more before the roadway is clear and re-opened.

The Tennessee Highway Patrol is currently investigating the crash. The name of the victim has not been released.

As far as the type of vehicle, officials tell us it is a passenger car, possibly a Honda. The impact was so severe that the vehicle was torn in half, the two halves landing some twenty feet apart.

An interruption in power is possible in the area due to impact with a utility pole. CEMC is in route to make repairs.

Homicide Victims & Families Remembered With Christmas Memorial Tree

“On Wings Of Love”
Remembering Victims/Families Of Homicide This Christmas

SPRINGFIELD TENNESSEE: (Smokey Barn News) – Robertson County can celebrate statistics that show homicides are down, thanks to the great efforts of local law enforcement but that fact offers little solace to families that have lost a loved one to crime.

The Robertson County District Attorney General’s Office would like to invite you to stop by the Stokes-Brown Library located at 405 White Street in Springfield during the Holiday Season to place an ornament on our “On Wings of Love” memorial tree. MAP

This tree was started as a way to remember victims of homicide in Robertson County. As part of the memorial, the tree is decorated with ornaments that are provided by family or friends.

You are welcome to come by and place an ornament on the tree in memory of your loved one, please be sure to include their name. You may not want to bring irreplaceable mementos as they could be accidentally lost or damaged.

If you live outside of the area and would like to mail your ornament to our office we will be honored to place the ornament on the tree for you.

Our office would like to extend our sympathies to you and your family for the loss of your loved one.

The tree will be on display throughout the month of December.

200 New Jobs Coming To Portland Via New Advanced Plating Facility

PORTLAND TENNESSEE: (Smokey Barn News) – Gov. Bill Haslam and Department of Economic and Community Development Commissioner Bob Rolfe today announced that Advanced Plating, Inc. will expand its Middle Tennessee operations by locating a new facility in Portland. The electroplating manufacturer will create 200 jobs and invest approximately $4 million in Sumner County.

“I thank Advanced Plating for its decision to expand its Tennessee operations and to create 200 jobs in Portland,” Haslam said. “In Tennessee, we still make things and Advanced Plating makes components for so many of our major industries like the automotive sector and music sector. It means a great deal that this manufacturing company has found success in our state. It’s because of investments like these that Tennessee will lead in the creation of high-quality jobs.”

“I congratulate Advanced Plating for expanding in Middle Tennessee,” Rolfe said. “Advanced Plating currently employs 40 Tennesseans, and with the creation of these 200 new jobs in Portland, this company is greatly increasing its footprint here. In Tennessee, we focus on not only recruiting new companies, but creating a working environment that promotes growth for our existing companies. I appreciate Advanced Plating for choosing to expand in Portland.”
