Obituary for Rita Moskovitz

Rita-Moskovitz-obitRita Moskovitz of Springfield, TN, 82 years old, passed away Wednesday night surrounded by family and her many friends.

She was a beloved teacher, special education pioneer and mentor to many.

Mrs. Rita, as her peers and students knew her, started in the teaching profession when special needs students were not yet part of the mainstream school system. She became a leader and advocate for special education advances in Tennessee. She taught special education in Greenbrier High School for over 30 years and was also a Sunday School teacher at West End Synagogue.

Her most cherished accomplishments she always said were the multitude of students, teaching assistants and future teachers that she helped reach their full potential. The entourage of friends, students and associates who rushed to the hospital to say their goodbyes in her final hours was a testament to the impact she had on so many lives. And nothing gave her greater pleasure in her life than that brought to her by her three grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her husband Herb. She is survived by her children Scott (Cindy) and Staci Joyce (Tim), her grandchildren Andrew (fiancé Erin McCafferty), Lauren Moskovitz and Hadli Joyce, and her sister Betty Lou Weiss (Walter).

A graveside service was held at Congregation Micah on Friday, August 19th at 10:00 am, followed by a reception in the Social Hall. Honorary pallbearers were Tommy and Wanda Mason, Philip and Rosio Mason, Clint and Nicole Mason, Rebekah and John Borthick, Carol and Randy Williamson, Mike Kavanaugh, Kenneth and Linda Cherry, Debbie Hollingsworth, Denise and Al Adcock, Robin and Ronnie Tate, Joy and Chip Murphy, Janice Sanford, Jennifer Jackson, Teresa Humphrey, her “Friday Night Chicks”, and Faye Marks. These friends, along with countless teachers and floral squareretired teachers, were her support system and friends throughout her life in Springfield. Funeral arrangements by Robertson County Funeral Home

Her final wish was that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to either, The Robertson County Senior Center, 615 S. Locust Street, or CASA of Robertson County, P.O. Box 967, both in Springfield, TN, 37172, where she had been very involved over the years.

Police allege that Dunn and another Springfield man, Mantorvis Young, 23, also from Springfield, shot at two men in a vehicle from two different positions. Both victims were hit by gunfire.

The incident started back on July 2 when two men showed up at NorthCrest Medical Center in Springfield seeking medical treatment for gunshot wounds. One of the men had been shot in the neck and the other in the leg, according to Springfield Police.

Around that same time, Springfield Officers were dispatched to the 300 block of 15th Ave in reference to a shooting. On arrival Officers found a vehicle abandoned in a driveway near the corner of John L Patterson and Bransford St across from the Bransford Community Center. The vehicle had a large amount of blood in it and several bullet holes in the trunk area.

Springfield police told Smokey Barn News that they believe the shooting took place at the intersection of Bessie St and 15th Ave. MAP

Police say that a home adjacent to where the shooting took place was hit by several rounds of gunfire. An elderly woman that resides at the home was inside at the time of the shooting but she was not hit by gunfire.

According to Springfield Police, the two victims, both males from Springfield, were inside a vehicle at the time of the shooting. The victim that was shot in the neck was transported via ground to Vanderbilt Medical Center in Nashville for further treatment. The other victim, shot in the left thigh, was transported to NorthCrest Medical Center where he was treated and released.

Det. Consiglio has a message for Young; “All you are doing is prolonging the inevitable, you can run and run and run but this isn’t going anywhere. You might as well face it, get it behind you and move on, the warrants aren’t going away.”

If you know the whereabouts of Mantorvis Young  please contact Crimestoppers @ 615-382- 3799 or Det. Charles Consiglio with the Springfield Police Department @ 615-384- 842.

Jamie Kopulos Death Ruled Homicide (Suspects Identified)

GREENBRIER TENNESSEE: (Smokey Barn News)  Jamie Kopulos, 26, of Greenbrier, was found dead in a ditch earlier this week in Madison (original story) and police have been working ever since to figure out how Kopulos body got there and if foul play was involved. Now police believe they have pieced together what happened to Kopulos and they are officially calling her death a homicide.

Kopulos’ body was found Monday night in a ditch located on Hudson Road near Pineywood Acres Drive in Madison Tennessee. MAP  Kopulos had not been seen since the night of Aug. 16 after leaving work at Steak ‘n Shake on Myatt Drive. The Steak ‘n Shake sits just over six miles from where her body was found. (Distance MAP) Kopulos was most recently living with her grandmother in Madison.

Mary V. Young

Mary Young

Now, almost a week after Kopulos’ body was found and 11 days after she went missing, Madison Precinct Detectives have charged Mary V. Young, 35, with criminal homicide and evidence tampering in connection with the death of Kopulos. Young was taken into custody Friday night. In addition, police say Maurice Boyd, 41 (who police allege was with Young the night Kopulos disappeared) will face the same charges. Boyd is still at large.

The decomposing body of Kopulos was discovered Monday evening in a ditch on Hudson Road near Pineywood Acres Drive. Her family reported her missing the same day.

An investigation by Detective Garrett Kidd shows that Kopulos wound up with Young and Boyd at a Madison motel room where police allege that Kopulos passed out after overdosing on heroin and Xanax, according to a release from Metro Nashville Police.

Police allege that Young and Boyd then carried Kopulos (likely still alive) from the room in a plastic storage tote and placed her into Young’s car. Police allege that Young and Boyd drove Kopulos to the area of Hudson Road and Pineywood Acres Drive and dumped Kopulos into the ditch.

Our news partner WSMV News 4 is reporting that Young told police that she met Kopulos at a motel in Madison. News 4 reports that Young told police that Kopulos overdosed after buying Xanax and heroin. Young says she and two other suspects started to panic. According to News 4, Young told police that they took Kopulos out of the motel in a plastic tub while she was still breathing, and dumped her in a ditch near Piney Acres Drive and Neely’s Bend Rd. hoping her body wouldn’t be found.

According to Madison Police, during an interview, Young acknowledged that they threw Kopulos’ cell phone and other belongings from the car after leaving her in the ditch.

Young is being held in lieu of $400,000 bond. Maurice Boyd is still at large. Anyone seeing Boyd or knowing his whereabouts is urged to contact the Emergency Communications Center at 615-862-8600 or Crime Stoppers at 615-742-7463.

A tribute below was written by Jim Myers, Food Columnist with the Tennessean:
Longtime Nashville chef Brian Uhl, who bridged the old worlds of continental-style fine dining with new eclecticism died Monday night, his wife Cindy Uhl confirmed. He was 51.

Most recently, Uhl served as restaurateur Randy Rayburn’s culinary right hand as executive chef at Midtown Cafe as well as executive chef and partner at Cabana. Previous to that, he worked at the helm of Rayburn’s famed Sunset Grill from 2000 until 2005 when they opened Cabana together with Craig Clifft.

“Our Cabana and Midtown families are deeply saddened by the passing for our friend, Brian. His passion for his craft and excellent mentorship of young chefs inspired so many of us here and throughout the Nashville culinary community. Our hearts are heavy and our prayers are with his family as we mourn this great loss,” said Clifft through a released statement.

During Uhl’s tenure as chef de cuisine at the legendary Wild Boar, he became the first Nashville chef invited to cook at the James Beard House in New York, back when invitations were highly coveted and hard to come by.

He employed his knowledge of wild game and the framework of European technique he learned from such notable chefs Sigi Eisenberg, Thomas Keller, Jean-Louis Palladin and Boris Keller, and pulled them in the modern age of cooking. In Nashville, he also cooked at F. Scott’s, the Opryland and Stouffer Hotels.
Over the years Uhl’s work has been featured in the pages Bon Appétit, The New York Times, GQ as well as USA Today. He was also a gracious and popular ambassador for floral squareNashville and the Tennessee Titans during the years he represented the team at the Taste of the NFL leading up to the Super Bowl.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Brian Uhl Culinary Scholarship at Nashville State Community College, which was established earlier this year to honor his contributions the culinary community.

Three Hospitalized Following Head-On Wreck In Cedar Hill Sunday

Story updated

CEDAR HILL TENNESSEE: (Smokey Barn News) – Three Cedar Hill residents have been transported to area hospitals (at least one with critical injuries) following a head-on accident on North Barnes Road in Cedar Hill Sunday morning.

North Barnes Rd ( a dead end road) sits up behind Buzzard Creek Rd tucked in between Sturgeon Creek Rd and the Red River. (Location of wreck)

The call came in to 911 at 9:40am and several agencies responded including the Adams Fire Department, the Robertson County Emergency Management Agency, the Robertson County Sheriff’s Office, Robertson County EMS and the Tennessee Highway Patrol.

There were two people in the passenger vehicle, a 1993 Honda  Accord, (Christopher Peters, 33, and Lacercia Renea Hunt, 31, both from Cedar Hill) both were thrown against the windshield in the collision. According to the THP they were not wearing their seat-belts.

According to Robertson County EMS Assistant Director Russell Gupton, “One female passenger suffered critical injuries and was transported by aircraft to Vanderbilt. A male in the same vehicle was transported by Robertson County EMS to Vanderbilt with potentially serious injuries. A male driver of the second vehicle was transported to NorthCrest for initial treatment. He was later transported by ambulance to Vanderbilt Medical Center for further treatment of injuries sustained in the accident.”

According to Adams Fire Chief Ray Brown, the driver of the pickup (Horace Newberry, 61 also of Cedar Hill) was pinned in the vehicle (a 1999 GMC Sierra) and had to be extricated. The THP indicates that Newberry was wearing his safety-belt.

As far as a cause of the accident, the THP indicates that the passenger vehicle crossed the center line and impacted the pickup truck head-on. The THP also said that the vehicle may have been traveling too fast  for road conditions.  According to the THP, the pickup truck was not moving at the time of the impact.

According to the THP, drugs or alcohol were not considered to be a factor in the accident.

We are still waiting on an update on the condition of all three passengers but some reports indicate that they are all out of the woods.

Jury Duty Scam Hits Robertson County

SPRINGFIELD TENNESSEE: (Smokey Barn News) – The Springfield Police Department is currently investigating  scam artists that are calling residents claiming they failed to show up for jury duty and must pay fines or risk arrest.

At least two Springfield residents have been targeted with these fake calls in the past few days.

The caller claims to be a sheriff’s deputy with the Robertson County Sheriff’s department informing them that they had failed to appear in Federal Court to serve on a Grand Jury. The caller further tells the victims that they are subject to arrest if they do not pay a fee to the sheriff’s office.

The victims are instructed to put money on a green dot money card or gift card and call the deputy back with the numbers on the card. The scammer claims to put a supervisor on the phone when the victims call back with the numbers.

“At no time will sheriff’s officers or court employees call a prospective juror to tell them that they failed to appear and a bench warrant has been issued. Nor will they ask for personal identifying information, such as bank account numbers or credit card information, they will never ask you to withdrawal money or purchase prepaid credit cards for payment of a fine.”

Anyone who receives such a call is advised to contact law enforcement immediately to file a report.

Anyone with information regarding these incidents is encouraged to contact Springfield Police at 615-384-8422 or Crime Stoppers at 615-382-3799. All information is anonymous.

 49-Market Intersection Getting Traffic Lights

SPRINGFIELD TENNESSEE: (Smokey Barn News) – After countless accidents over the years (two in just the last week) the Hwy 49/257 intersection will be getting a traffic signal.

Officials tell Smokey Barn News that requests for a traffic signal at the Hwy 49/257/Mt. Zion/Flewellyn Rd intersection MAP started about twenty years ago. It took the combined effort of local officials to get the ball rolling.  Robertson County Commissioner Stacey Moore broke the news officially today.

Moore said it was a community effort that included State Rep, Dr. Sabi Kumar, Senator Kerry Roberts and the Robertson County Commission but she gives most of the credit to local citizens that tirelessly requested that traffic signals be installed.

“The Robertson County Highway Department, Delvin Hester and Lynnette Crain, have played a major role in the planning of this project. They continue to work closely with TDOT in preparation of the red-light,” Moore said.

According to Moore, TDOT will begin the construction, that will include widening of the intersection, as well as other improvements, in Feb of 2017.
