Carrie Gasaway Pleads Guilty To Theft Today: Repays $49,000

SPRINGFIELD TENNESSEE: (Smokey Barn News) – Carrie Gasaway, wife of former Robertson County Circuit Court Judge John Gasaway who retired last year, was in Robertson County court this morning.

Carrie GasawayCarrie Gasaway arrived at the Robertson County court building this morning around 11:a.m. and by noon it was over, Carrie pled guilty to a class C Felony. The crime was theft over $10.000 but less than $60,000. According to Assistant District General Attorney Tom Lawson, “In Tennessee, that carries between three and six years. Carrie was given a three year split confinement sentence that will run after the four year sentence she was already given for an extortion charge last year, taking her out to 2022. She already has one year under her belt so she has six years left.

“As part of the sentence, Carrie has to serve 40 days in jail starting on August 10th. After she completes the 40 day sentence there will be 90 days of house arrest and as part of the plea agreement she had to pay restitution in three cases today. The total amount paid to victims was $49,000.”

Why was the prosecution handled by a District Attorney from outside the county?

In Tennessee, any time there is an actual or even perceived conflict of interest in a case, the District Attorney General’s Conference Office in Nashville will request an outside District Attorney Office to come in and prosecute the case.

TN Realty Red Barn 300Because local (Robertson County) D.A.’s practiced in front of Carrie’s husband, Circuit Court Judge John Gasaway, it was (at least) a perceived conflict of interest. Because of that, District Attorney General Tom P Thompson, Jr’s team, over in the 15th district, was asked to prosecute the case to avoid any improprieties or allegations.

After a jury trial last May in a different case, Carrie was convicted of extortion and received four years of probation.  That  case also involved restitution and an agreement to forfeit her law license for life and waive any right to appeal her case later on. Today’s plea wrapped up cases with three other victims.

The charges that Carrie pled guilty to today were based on acts that occurred in February 2015. The extortion charge goes back to acts that occurred back in 2010. MORE Carrie was under indictment for extortion when the theft case occurred.

Several months ago Carrie asked the court to allow her husbend John Gasaway to act as her attorney. Because of the facts of the case, the State filed a Motion to not allow it because of a perceived conflict of interest. Judge Paul Summers agreed and granted the motion to disqualify John Gasaway as Carrie’s attorney.

According to Lawson, the Gasaway’s were in bankruptcy at the time and could not afford to hire an attorney, so Judge Summers appointed 19th Judicial District of Tennessee Public Defender Roger Nell to act as Carrie’s attorney.

Judge Paul Summers formerly served as Attorney General for the State of Tennessee, which is Tennessee’s top legal advisory office. Most recently, Summers retired as a Judge of Tennessee Court of Criminal Appeals but he still hears cases by designation, as he did in this case.

Had Judge Summers not excepted Carrie Gasaway’s plea of guilty today, then the case would have been tried to a jury in Montgomery County in February 2017.

Lowe’s Pays $3.6 Mil for Coopertown Land: Bringing 600 Jobs

COOPERTOWN TENNESSEE: (Smokey Barn News) – Smokey Barn News has confirmed that Lowe’s Companies, Inc “Lowe’s Home Improvement” has acquired 109.707 acres of land in Coopertown, the deal becoming official last Wednesday.

According to public records, Lowe’s paid $3,620,430.00 for the land which is located near Interstate 24 and York Rd. MAP

For the past several months Smokey Barn News has been tracking the possibility of a large distribution center coming to Coopertown. The project has been referred to as “Project Ally,” officials being tight lipped on the name of the firm until today. Coopertown Mayor Sam Childs told Smokey Barn News weeks ago that he has been working for years (since he was first elected into office) to bring a big project into that area.

Mayor Childs said that he had been pushing the property hard to shopping center developers but after realizing the size and scope of this project he realized that it will likely act as a catalyst to bring lots of commerce into Coopertown.

Payne 2015 Chevrolet Impala lt 300Referring to the project as “Project Ally” over the past few months, Childs told Smokey Barn News that according to drawings the new facility would be about a million square feet under roof.  “The equivalent of 22 football fields under one roof,” according to a release on Lowe’s website.  Childs said that hundreds of 18 wheelers a a week would move in and out of the facility and it would operate as a 24 hour a day three shift operation creating about 600 white and blue collar jobs.

Childs said the project will approach a half a billion dollars when it’s all said and done. “It’ll be the biggest thing that’s happened on the North side between Nashville and Clarksville,” Childs said.

Half Billion? “Yes, they’ll have to buy 110 acres of property, do wetland mitigation to get the site done. They’ve estimated the building at being about $75 million by itself. The equipment in it is going to be at least that much. Then they have to improve York Rd from Hwy 49 all the way up past the edge of their property. Then they have to put in water facilities, all the utilities, underground and on top. So when you start adding up all the real stuff they have to do up there the numbers start rolling up real quick.”

The location in Coopertown was one of several being considered by Lowe’s. We asked Mayor Childs what  the project would mean to the city of Coopertown. Childs said those 600 employees will need to live somewhere and he guesses that there will be a bit of a housing boom around the project making the area more favorable to commercial development. “We have about 400 acres up in there around this plant that could be easily developed,” Childs said. The water “Project Ally” would bring in would also make it easier to attract commercial development, Childs said weeks ago.

The location sits almost dead center between Clarksville and Nashville right off Interstate 24. Along with the surrounding cities and the large number of Robertson County residents commuting out of the county for work, Lowe’s should have no problem recruiting the talent needed to staff the large facility.

“It’s a really big thing, it’s a big deal for this area, I just cant over stress it. It’s really going to change our whole complexion. I saw the artist drawing, the building is going to be beautiful. Since it’s out where it is, Coopertown residents are not even going to know it’s there but they’re going to start recognizing the benefits from it.” Referring to the businesses that the new facility would likely attract Childs said, “They’ll be able go shopping some place fairly close, this is in the future of course, but this will be the magnet that will cause it to happen.”

PHOTO WKRN

The official announcement of the project occurred today in Coopertown. In attendance were the local city and state officials including Governor Bill Haslam. The announcement taking place at Coopertown Middle School since the weather made the site of the new facility impracticable. The land was formally owned by Dorothy and Milton Grief and incorporates over 109 acres that consists of farm land, fields and wetlands.

Lowe’s posted the following statement on their website this morning.  “We’re continually working to make doing business with Lowe’s easier for customers. Investing to build a new direct fulfillment center – the first of its kind for Lowe’s – allows us to offer customers more products online, consolidate multiple parcel shipments and ship purchases directly to customers faster and more efficiently,” said Brent Kirby, Lowe’s chief supply chain officer. “The Nashville area was chosen due to its existing large shipping hubs, access to interstate roadways and well-skilled workforce.”

Just to clarify, this is not a Lowe’s retail store, Lowe’s is referring to the facility as a “direct fulfillment center.”  According to Lowe’s website, plans call for it to be operational by the third quarter of 2018, initially employing approximately 400 people and growing to 600 employees by 2022. One of the most technology driven and sophisticated operations the company has built, the center will ship parcel packages directly to Lowe’s customers and stores nationwide.

As part of the deal, Lowe’s will preserve a significant portion of the land (about 20 acres) as wetlands for the local ecosystem.

Lowe’s Companies, Inc., headquartered in Mooresville, North Carolina, is an American company that operates a chain of retail home improvement and appliance stores in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. According to Wikipedia Lowe’s has about 265,000 employees worldwide and in 2014 had a revenue of $56.22 billion. More about Lowe’s.

Fire Causes Heavy Damage To Greenbrier Home Thursday

GREENBRIER TENNESSEE: (Smokey Barn News) – Around 1pm Thursday afternoon firefighters were called to a residential fire located on the corner of Dickens St. and Oliphant St. in Greenbrier. MAP

When firefighters arrived they found a significant fire in the basement of the home and heavy smoke showing on the outside.

Officials tell Smokey Barn News that people were home at the time of the fire but they were able to escape the home safely.  The fire is still under investigation but officials told Smokey Barn News that they believe that the fire started in the basement. The exact cause in not known but Greenbrier Fire Chief Kyle Hamill said he suspects an electrical issue may be the cause and he’s not labeling the fire as suspicious.

Firefighters from Greenbrier, Ridgetop, White House Community, Springfield and Millersville all worked to put out the fire. Chief Hamill said that structurally the home was intact but a large amount of contents in the basement were destroyed.

Hamill said that 25 to 40 percent of the home was damaged by fire and the entire home suffered heavy smoke and heat damage but firefighters were able to salvage some personal belongings.

Hamill said he believed that there were two people in the home at the time of the fire and they made it out safely, unfortunately some pets were lost, at least one small dog and a bird.

Hamill said he believed the family was insured but the Robertson County Emergency Management Agency put the them in contact with the Red Cross.

Chief Hamill added that he wanted to thank the other agencies that responded to assist with the fire. “The heat and how deep the fire was in the basement made it very intensive from a manpower perspective, Hamill said.”

Hydroplaning Blamed for Rollover Crash In Creek

ORLINDA TENNESSEE: (Smokey Barn News) – A Springfield man is very lucky to be alive after he lost control of his vehicle on a patch of water, hydroplaning off the road finally crashing upside down in a creek.

The accident occurred just after 1:pm at the intersection of Roy Pearson Rd and S. Lamont Rd Friday afternoon. (Location of wreck) The driver spoke to Smokey Barn News about the ordeal, he was visibly shaken after the accident. He said after the vehicle flipped he was pinned inside by the safety belt. He struggled in the partially submerged vehicle to release the belt and was finally successful.  Wholesale Nashville 2016 ColoradoAccording to Orlinda Fire Chief Dusty Johnson, after releasing the seat-belt, several Good Samaritans helped the young man get the door open so he could get out of the vehicle.

“I was driving down the road on my way home when a lady waved me and another man down telling us that a man was trapped in the vehicle that was upside-down in the water. I ran down to try to get him out but the doors were stuck. That’s when the other man got a crowbar and we pride the door open to get him out.” Anonymous Good Samaritan

According to the Tennessee Highway Patrol at the scene, hydroplaning was the cause and drugs and alcohol were not considered to be factors.

Last night’s rain left part of S. Lamont Rd covered in water from the direction the driver was heading. Experts say that there’s no way to tell how deep the water is when it’s covering the road, it can be a quarter inch or there may be no road at all if it’s been washed out.

The Orlinda Fire Department, the Tennessee Highway Patrol, the Robertson County Sheriff”s Office, Robertson County Emergency Management Agency and Robertson County EMS all responded to the scene.

Smokey Barn News has confirmed that the Tennessee Highway Patrol has brought in their helicopter to assist in the search.

Chance Encounter Ignites New Industry In Robertson County

SPRINGFIELD TENNESSEE: (Smokey Barn News) – A chance meeting months ago has brought a brand new industry to Robertson County. The new company capitalizes on local agriculture and has even brought an old building in Springfield back to life.

Smokey Barn News was there for the ribbon cutting this afternoon. The company, Stony Creek Colors, will be occupying about 10,000 square feet of the 80,000 square foot recently renovated Bransford Heights building which sets right in the middle of Springfield tucked on the edge of suburbia.

The facility is located on Central Ave and M S Couts Blvd. not far from downtown Springfield. MAP

Stony Creek Colors is a natural colorant manufacturer, “We sell clean and safe plant based dies for the textile industry,” said founder Sarah Bellos. “Most dyes used today for textiles are from petrochemicals. We’re replacing that with a completely plant based natural product.”

The move to Robertson County may have occurred if not for a chance encounter between Robertson County Mayor Howard Bradley and Sarah Bellos at the Lipscomb University class on civic leadership. “The timing was just perfect,” said Robertson County Mayor Howard Bradley.

The move to Springfield is expected to bring about 50 jobs in the short term with a potential of hundreds as the company grows.

Funnel cloud in Robertson County over Springfield

Officials: “It Was Not A Tornado”

ROBERTSON COUNTY TENNESSEE: (Smokey Barn News) – According to officials with the National Weather Service, the funnel cloud hovering around the Springfield area this afternoon was in fact not a tornado.

Keystone 300Smokey Barn News spoke with the Emergency Management Agency Director R.L. Douglas, “It was not a tornado, it may have looked like a tornado but it had no power and there are no reports of damage anywhere in the county.”

After receiving many reports about a funnel looking cloud, Springfield set off their tornado sirens.

Though it was very exciting for a few minutes, from what we can gather (whatever it was) it will likely be classified as a “Landspout” which is much weaker and generally smaller than a tornado. “This one lacked the ingredients to be a tornado,” Douglas said. More on Landspouts.

The first siting of “it” was near Cave Spring Springs Rd around 5:pm and the sightings lasted for about 15 minutes. MAP It was seen by residents all over Coopertown Springfield and Greenbrier.
