Robertson County Gets D- On Social Distancing (Based On Cell Data)

According to the CDC, some people will have no symptoms but still transmit the virus. This could suggest that the number of cases in Robertson County could be higher than the official recorded cases. There are still many unknowns with this virus. All we know for sure is it is easily transmitted from person to person, and it can kill. That is why our local leaders all the way up to the President and the CDC are promoting social distancing and hand washing.

In addition, the CDC is now strongly recommending wearing some kind of mask when out in public.

An important message from the Tennessee Department of Health

We all have to work together to stop the spread of COVID-19. Feeling the need to leave home? Ask yourself if that trip is REALLY essential.

Please remember to practice physical distancing. Do your part. Stay apart.

Orlinda: Byrum Porter Senior Center Re-Opening Plan…

ORLINDA TENNESSEE: (Smokey Barn News) – Efforts are underway for the Byrum Porter Senior Center to safely reopen along with a new enclosed expansion, outdoor concert and yard sale.

An update from Byrum-Porter Senior Center…

“We are planning a great opening for the month of July if Governor Lee permits. Lots of activities being planned (Covid 19 guidelines will be followed) and more coming. We have missed our participants and the phone has been ringing off the wall with people asking about when we will reopen.

We have completed our new enclosure, in the back of the building, and it brings in lots of light and will be a great space for us to use.

We now have a room we call the Red Room (because of the floor paint) and it will have our exercise equipment, be used for our Craft-Sewing Classes and also be home to a table to be used to play cards.

Please come out to see us when we reopen as we have been busy refreshing the center.

Our plans, at this time, is to have a free outdoor concert with the Good Time Charlie band for the whole community. Social Distancing can be practiced.

We also want to have an outdoor Yard Sale. Participants have been bringing items for us to sell so keep on the lookout for the next newsletter later in June for all the details.

Our exercise classes will be back as well as Tai Chi and we will have many new things that we can do safely.

Bus trips are still on for Fall and still time to sign up.”

Orlinda Dairy Farm May Have To Close Due To COVID-19

ORLINDA TENNESSEE: (Smokey Barn News) – As with many businesses across the nation, COVID-19 has taken a toll and one Robertson County farmer says he’s about to lose everything.

The Groves Family Dairy farm in Orlinda is just weeks away from shutting down, according to the farm owner Randall Groves. After exhausting everything else, the family set up a Go Fund Me page to try and save their farm and their home. Created on Friday, the family has already raised over $14,000.

Groves Family Dairy has been supplying milk across Middle Tennessee for 9 years, but COVID-19 pulled the rug out from under them. The Groves situation made CBS news when News Channel 5 ran their story Friday. We have added News 5’s video report below.

“It’s like pouring gas in your car every day, and never moving,” Randall Groves, told Smokey Barn News’ partner News 5. “I’ve never experienced anything like it.”

Groves says the farm has gone from selling 4,000 gallons of milk a week, to just 250. The result has cost them around $135,000.

While the 160 cows at the farm keep producing milk, Groves says when restaurants closed due to COVID-19 regulations, he had fewer customers. With no one to buy the milk, a lot of it gets dumped out. Groves says it is illegal in Tennessee to sell or donate raw milk.

“Once we get the milk, we can’t process it because we don’t have the market for it,” said Groves.

In addition, the farm has experienced more financial hardship after their walk-in cooler went out, and everything inside had to be thrown out. Also, their delivery truck broke down.

“There are a lot of people out there like us, who are struggling,” said Groves. “A lot of farmers are struggling.”

The Groves Family decided to open their Farm Store three days a week to help make ends meet, but the air conditioning went out in the store, which impacted the ability to sell certain products.

Cassie Groves said after trying everything, she decided to start a Go Fund Me to see if neighbors and friends would be willing to make a donation to help save the farm. She said she was hesitant to ask for help, but believes this is the last option.

“We have pretty much exhausted every avenue we can to keep bills paid,” said Groves.

The Groves family said losing the farm, and their home would be devastating.
