Space Heater Ignites Springfield Home

SPRINGFIELD TENNESSEE: (Smokey Barn News) – Officials say a space heater set to close to blankets and clothing was the likely trigger for a structure fire in Springfield Thursday morning.

The call came into 911 around 9:30 by an alert neighbor who reported seeing heavy smoke rolling out of the windows of a home.

When Springfield Firefighters from station one and station two arrived, the home, located in the 400 block of Circle Dr., was showing heavy smoke but no flames were visible. MAP Firefighters made entry into the home and found an active fire in a small section of the home.

Springfield Firefighters were able to keep the fire contained so the actual fire damage was only 15%. It’s what firefighters call a good stop.

Thanks to the alert neighbor and the great work by our Springfield Firefighters the home should be livable again within just a few weeks.

According to  Springfield Interim Fire Chief Jeff Glodoski, the fire is being labeled as an accident and no one was home at the time of the fire so no injuries were reported. “I was just an accident,” said Chief Glodowski.

Partial Building Collapse Of Church On Main St Slows Traffic In Springfield

SPRINGFIELD TENNESSEE: (Smokey Barn News) – A partial building collapse overnight in Springfield is restricting traffic on Main St in the city’s historic district.

The building is located on Main St near 8th Ave. MAP The area will likely be taped off until engineers can assess the danger of further collapse. The building is currently home to Iglesia Christian Church.

The collapse, likely triggered by last night’s heavy winds, brought the upper front facade of the building down onto the sidewalk.

The sidewalk under the collapse is part of the city’s Greenway which will likely be closed until engineers can fully assess the damage. According to the building’s owner, the damage does not appear to extend inside the structure but engineers are still investigating. Repair work may begin as early as tomorrow, the owner said.

No injuries were reported.

Officer Martin with the Springfield Police Department has secured the area for the public’s safety. The collapse along with the cleanup process is restricting traffic flow on Main St so expect minor delays.

THP Revises Report On Fatal I65 Crash That Killed Three

ROBERTSON COUNTY (Smokey Barn News) – The THP is revising their report on the fatal I65 crash that claimed the lives of three Kentuckians Friday night.

The crash occurred around 6 PM just inside the Tennessee border from Kentucky near mile marker 117 at the top of the county.  (Location of crash) According to the Tennessee Highway Patrol, the crash took the lives of  53-year-old Shirley Posey of Bowling Green, KY,  53-year-old Robin Denise Cofer of Bowling Green, KY, and 58-year-old Michael Ray Posey of Russellville, KY.

According to the THP’s preliminary report, the crash involved a 2015 Nissan Versa and two tractor-trailers.  The Nissan Versa (with three onboard) was traveling south on I-65 in the lane closest to the median when it was impacted in the rear by a tractor-trailer, the THP said.

The impact caused the Nissan to leave the roadway (left) into the median cutting-through to the northbound lanes of I-65 where it impacted another tractor-trailer head-on.

Now, after further investigation, THP investigators have determined that the driver of the Nissan Versa abruptly applied the brakes in order to pull into the median to cross over on I-65. A tractor-trailer behind the Nissan attempted to stop but was unable to.

According to the THP, due to the Nissan’s “abrupt brake application,” the driver of the tractor-trailer was not able to avoid the collision and struck the vehicle in the rear triggering the fatal crash.

The driver of the first tractor-trailer was injured in the crash and transported to a local hospital. The driver of the second tractor-trailer was not injured.

All occupants in Nissan were pronounced deceased at the scene.

No charges have been filed against anyone involved in the crash.

Robertson County Emergency Medical Services, Cross Plains Rescue, Air EVAC Life Team and the Robertson County Emergency Management Agency were called to the scene.

WWII Mortar Round Found With Metal Detector 40 Miles East Of Robertson County

LEBANON TENNESSEE: (Smokey Barn News) – About 40 miles east of Robertson County today a man with a metal detector literally discovered the find of the century.

While searching in an area near the Hartmann Plantation in Lebanon TN MAP a treasure hunter unearthed a live mortar round (pictured) leftover from when the area was used as training grounds during WWII, according to the Lebanon Police Department.

In some parts of the world, finding live mortar rounds or undetonated land mines is a relatively common occurrence but in the US it’s a little unusual. To make it even more unusual, this round had gone unnoticed or discovered by anyone for over 74 years.

The Tennessee Highway Patrol sent a Bomb Tech Liaison, along with Fort Campbell representatives to confirm it was indeed a live mortar round.

The mortar was too unstable to move a long distance, so it was moved to a safe area and detonated.

Officials say the blast was heard from a distance, which caused alarm for many residents.

To reduce the odds of someone stumbling on another mortar round, the area was searched before the scene was released and deemed safe.
