Should TENN legalize “Medical” CBD Or Marijuana With Higher THC? Take The Senator Roberts Survey

MIDDLE TENNESSEE: (Smokey Barn News) – Senator Kerry Roberts, 25th District, which includes Robertson, Dickson, Cheatham, Humphreys and Hickman Counties, has released a Legislative Survey to get a better understanding of how citizens in Tennessee feel about legalizing (with a doctor’s supervision) CBD with higher levels of THC or Marijuana.

Here’s the exact wording on the Legislative Survey.

“Cannabis oils (CBD) are legal in Tennessee. CBD oils generally contain only trace amounts of THC, the chemical that creates the “high” in marijuana, but some advocates want to legalize CBD or marijuana with THC for pain relief or other benefits. Should Tennessee legalize “medical” CBD or marijuana with higher amounts of THC to be dispensed under a doctor’s supervision?”

“It’s essential for me to know the opinions and positions of my constituents on the issues,” Senator Roberts told Smokey Barn News Thursday.  “This year’s survey covers a variety of topics and only takes a couple of minutes to complete. With the response I’m receiving, I should have a good idea of where Robertson County folks stand on the issues. I look forward to sharing the results after people have a chance to respond.”

Other questions on the survey include: Should teachers be armed? Should Tennessee join Oklahoma and 14 other states in allowing permitless carry? Should Tennessee restore the right to vote to ex-felons who have committed non-violent offenses and have completed the terms of their sentence? Should Tennessee legalize marijuana for recreational use? Should Tennessee increase or decrease its efforts to limit illegal immigrants coming into our state?  Do you support raising the age to purchase e-cigarettes and vaping supplies to 21? and more.

ROBERTSON COUNTY TENNESSEE: (Smokey Barn News) -According to investigators with the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office a body has been recovered near Lock B South on the Cumberland River.

Officials tell Smokey Barn News that a fisherman called 911 at approximately 11:50 A.M. on January 26, to report a body located near the shoreline.

Based on preliminary information gathered at the scene, investigators believe the body to be that of missing 19-year-old teen Zach Marsh, however, the body will be sent to the Medical Examiner’s Office for positive identification and to determine cause of death.

Marsh’s vehicle was found abandoned on Jarrell Ridge Road on December 20, 2019, approximately five miles upstream from where the body was located.

Electric Portable Space Heater Safety

When the weather turns cold, it can bring a chill into our homes. Portable space heaters have become a popular way to supplement central heating or heat one room.

If you plan to use portable electric space heaters, make sure to follow these tips and recommendations:

HEATER CHECKLIST
• Purchase a heater with the seal of a qualified
testing laboratory.
• Keep the heater at least 3 feet (1 metre) away
from anything that can burn, including people.
• Choose a heater with a thermostat and overheat
protection.
• Place the heater on a solid, flat surface.
• Make sure your heater has an auto shut-off to turn
the heater off if it tips over.
• Keep space heaters out of the way of foot traffic.
Never block an exit.
• Keep children away from the space heater.
• Plug the heater directly into the wall outlet.
Never use an extension cord.
• Space heaters should be turned off and
unplugged when you leave the room or go to bed.

Types of electric space heaters

Oil or water-filled radiator
Heated oil or water travels
through the heater.

Robertson County Fair, TN – Thank you to everyone for helping us receive the 2019 2nd Runner Up AAA Division Merit Award at the Tennessee Association of Fairs Convention.

Can’t wait to see you at our 2020 Fair, September 8- September 12.

The best fairs in Tennessee are being honored for their success in sharing agriculture with citizens statewide.

The Tennessee Department of Agriculture (TDA) and Tennessee Association of Fairs recently presented awards to the top county, regional, and state agricultural fairs for the 2019 season. Approximately 850 people attended the Fairs Merit Awards event during the 98th Tennessee Association of Fairs Convention held Jan. 16-18, 2020, in Murfreesboro.

A total of 53 fairs received the Award of Merit based on agriculture, educational value, overall operations, and the promotion of local interest and community spirit.

“For more than 160 years, the Tennessee Department of Agriculture has been promoting agriculture through fairs across our state,” Agriculture Commissioner Charlie Hatcher D.V.M. said. “Our abundant food and fiber originates from our farms and forests, and you cannot put a true value on the beauty of our landscape and the quality of life that we all enjoy. Fairs highlight those assets and our rural heritage.”

“Agricultural fairs provide good, clean competition, entertainment for all ages, community support, and promote our youth,” Tennessee Association of Fairs President Phil Booher said. “More than 22,000 volunteers are key to that success statewide, representing the spirit of greatness in our Volunteer State.”

Millersville Fire Department & Tennessee Department of Commerce & Insurance with a message about Home Fires

During a home fire, every second counts, especially today. Forty years ago, residents had over 17 minutes to escape a home fire with their lives. Today, that number is now under 3 minutes. A closed door can hinder flames and smoke from spreading to other rooms and can help deprive a fire of the oxygen it needs to grow, limiting the structural damage a fire can cause and saving lives.

Combined with working smoke alarms and an escape plan that you practice with family members, make closing the door at night a practice for 2020.

The NorthCrest Foundation Presents a new fundraiser “The Great Barn Party” set for May 2. See details to reserve your spot!

The NorthCrest Foundation is organizing a brand new fundraiser to help complete Phase 2 NorthCrest updates (see our 2019 Year in Review at right) and to continue the tradition of Camp TAG, a camp that has been hosted by NorthCrest Hospice for more than 25 years. Comfort Care Hospice is not only allowing Judy Suter and her team of volunteer angels to continue this camp, but they are embracing this wonderful endeavor.

Camp T.A.G. (Teaching About Grief) is free of charge to children in our community identified by school resource counselors who have lost a parent or guardian to death, or maybe deployment or incarceration. The camp hosts between 25-50 children every year and the campers learn how to work through grief, anxiety and anger through fun team building activities, expression through art, and counseling from trained social workers and chaplains.

The Great Barn Party will take place on Saturday, May 2 at the Smiley Hollow Barn. Each year, we hope to offer a fun theme, or fun entertainment to keep things fresh and something to look forward to!

Our special guest for the inaugural year hails from right down the road from Nashville – Stephen Bargatze – a comedic magician. He has more than 25 years of stage experience with audiences from casinos, cruise ships, the corporate stage, and colleges and high schools. His stage show will make you scream with laughter and also amaze you with his magic talent. How DID he do that??

As Director of Student Services Program for Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association, Bargatze also speaks to thousands of students each year using his magic to show today’s youth how drugs, alcohol and tobacco can effect their lives.
So pull on some comfy clothes, grab some close friends and come enjoy a fun show after eating what Smiley’s is famous for – traditional style pork BBQ, barbecue chicken, baked beans, cole slaw, fresh fruit, corn cakes and numerous homecooked desserts!

Tickets for the event are $50.00 each, or you can host a table for $500.00 that seats 10 guests.

To reserve your spot at The Great Barn Party, call Adele at 615-382-6048 or email adele_watts@northcrest.com.

Coopertown Elementary Receives Gift From City Police Department

Coopertown Police Department Chief Tyler Haley and two of his officers presented Coopertown Elementary School principal Tiffany Hyde a gift of 45 handheld communications radios on Monday, January 6.

Tyler said the money for the gift was a result of fundraising during the town’s 2019 Barrel Festival. During the festival, he, his officers, and the town’s mayor volunteered to be dunked in order to generate funds for the city. After discussions with his department and town officials, the decision was made to provide CES with the radios.

School principal Tiffany Hyde said the gift was a welcome one with safety as a major consideration.

“Coopertown Elementary School is extremely grateful for the generous donation of 45 walkie talkies units from the Coopertown Police Department,” she said. “This donation helps us with ensuring safety for all of our students and staff by providing an immediate form of communication in the event of an emergency.”

Robertson County Approves 2 Deputies For Ridgetop

Robertson County Approves 2 Deputies For Ridgetop

RIDGETOP TENNESSEE: (Smokey Barn News) – After a year of meetings, frustration, and turmoil, the city of Ridgetop may be finally seeing the light at the end of the proverbial tunnel regarding its police department.

Since January of 2018, the city of Ridgetop has gone from a police force of about five officers down to zero. Then, following a brief legal battle, the department was reopened and two officers were hired back.  Then city leaders downsized the department to just one officer citing budgetary constraints. A short time later the one remaining officer resigned leaving the city, once again, with no police department. Full STORY

Now it appears that the city may be going in an entirely new direction.

Sponsored

Following the resignation of its last remaining officer, the city of Ridgetop approached the county about receiving additional law enforcement services.  The Robertson County Sheriff’s Office is currently assisting Ridgetop by responding to calls for services. The City of Ridgetop offered to provide funding for additional law enforcement services within the city limits,  equivalent to two full-time Patrol Deputies.

At the Robertson County Commission meeting Monday evening, a budget amendment was presented to the Commission for the two additional deputies. The budget amendment was approved unanimously.

The funding is for salaries, training, benefits, equipment and other related costs totaling $125,000.00, the equivalent of two deputies operating up to 80 hours of service per week. The city of Ridgetop has offered the Sheriff’s Office the use of the city’s old police station as a substation but it is unclear if or how the Sheriff’s Office would use the facility.

According to the Robertson County Sheriff’s Office, the two deputies would operate/patrol within the city of Ridgetop but would be employees of the Sheriff’s Office. They would not be employed or managed by Ridgetop city leaders. The two Deputies would offer a full range of services that include investigatory, patrol, moving vehicle violations, visibility, and calls for service.

The final step in the process will be an official approval of the budget parameters by the city of Ridgetop.

In Special Called Meeting Ridgetop Approves 2 Deputy Plan

In Special Called Meeting Ridgetop Approves 2 Deputy Plan

RIDGETOP TENNESSEE: (Smokey Barn News) – In a special called meeting Thursday evening, the city of Ridgetop unanimously voted to approve a proposed agreement to have the Robertson County Sheriff’s Office take over law enforcement services for the city.

Smokey Barn News attended the meeting and broadcast the meeting live. You can watch a recording of the live broadcast here or click on photo left. The special called meeting was not well attended. Several citizens expressed an interest in speaking before the vote but were denied. The vote was unanimous, the plan was approved.

The signing of the deal comes after a year of meetings, frustration, and turmoil for the city of Ridgetop.

Back in January of 2019 Ridgetop’s police chief confronted Ridgetop Mayor Tony Reasoner about assigning ticket quotas to his department. No charges were ever brought against the Mayor or any other city leader. After a review of the facts in the case, Special Prosecutor Tommy Thompson decided against prosecution because, according to him, what they did was not a “criminal act.”

According to Thompson, the only real applicable statute (39-16-516) does address ticket quotas but only as a directive.  “This statute does not create a criminal act but is simply a prohibition against the city in the form of a legislative directive.” – (Additionally) “The statute prescribes the conduct of the city only, and not any person in their individual capacity.” FULL STORY

After Thompson’s decision, Ridgetop’s police department went from a police force of about five officers down to zero when the city disbanded the department altogether. Then, following a brief legal battle, the department was reopened and two officers were hired back. MORE Then city leaders downsized the department to just one officer citing budgetary constraints. MORE A short time later, the one remaining officer resigned leaving the city (once again) with no police department. FULL STORY

Following the resignation of its last remaining officer, the city of Ridgetop approached the county about receiving additional law enforcement services.  The Robertson County Sheriff’s Office is currently assisting Ridgetop by responding to calls for services. In the proposal, the City of Ridgetop offered funding for additional law enforcement services within the city limits equivalent to two full-time Patrol Deputies.

At the Robertson County Commission meeting held on Monday evening (Jan 27, 2020) the budget amendment was presented to the Commission for the two additional deputies. The budget amendment was approved unanimously.

Sponsored

Now that the final piece was approved by Ridgetop, the Robertson County Sheriff’s Office can start the process of putting the deputies in place.

Mother With Infant Evades Police 100 mph On I65 Charged

MILLERSVILLE/WHITE HOUSE TENNESSEE: (Smokey Barn News) – Millersville Police have charged a Murfreesboro woman with Felony-Evading-With-A-Deadly-Weapon and Reckless-Endangerment after she was allegedly clocked by police going 100 miles per hour with an infant in the vehicle on I65 Saturday morning.

According to Millersville Police, around 7:30 Saturday morning, 20-year-old Taylor Renee Delk Parson of Murfreesboro was allegedly driving at a high rate of speed on I65 through Millersville when a Millersville Officer spotted her vehicle and gave pursuit.

The Millersville Officer tried to initiate a traffic stop for speeding on the interstate within the Millersville city limits. The pursuit went several miles at speeds up to 100 miles an hour, according to Millersville Police.

Determining the danger to citizens was too high in the heavy traffic, the officer chose to discontinue the pursuit, according to Millersville Police. The officer then turned off his blue lights and continued onto exit 108 in White House. After exiting the interstate the officer coincidentally spotted the vehicle and again attempted to make a traffic stop.

With the assistance of White House Police, Parson stopped at Raymond Hirsch Parkway and Hwy 76 MAP and was taken into custody without incident. It was then that police discovered that an infant (about 2 to 3-month-old) was in the vehicle.

Due to the child’s age, the baby was transported to a local hospital for evaluation, according to Robertson County EMS.

Parson was charged with Felony-Evading-With-A-Deadly-Weapon (vehicle) and Reckless-Endergment for allegedly endangering the child and the public. She was transported to the Sumner County Jail under a $10,000 bond but, according to Sumner County jail, was released ROR.  Parson’s court date is February 12 at 9 am.

Millersville Police, White House Police, Roberton Couthy EMS and the White House Fire Department responded to the scene.

Valentine’s Day Gift Advice From A Local Florist

ROBERTSON COUNTY TENNESSEE: (Smokey Barn News) – Well Robertson County, Valentine’s Day is around the corner and Susan Kessler, owner of Flowers By Judy has some great tips on how to make your Valentine feel, well, like a Valentine, even if you have no money at all.

Susan says it’s not about the money, so if you are cash strapped that’s OK. Write your Valentine a note, not a text message or an email, a handwritten note is a more personal sentiment and it will mean a lot.

Susan says that if you do decide to send flowers, be sure to call a local florist. “It doesn’t’ have to me my shop but you’ll get a better result if you call the florist directly. If you call the national numbers you’ll end up at a local florist anyway and the national number takes a cut of the price. Best bang for the buck, call a local florist.”

Not sure what to send? No need to worry, the designers at Flowers By Judy can help you customize something spectacular with fresh flowers cut to order from the finest floral farms delivered to their home or office.
