Semi Hauling Hazardous Material Overturns On 109

PORTLAND TENNESSEE: (Smokey Barn News) – A tractor-trailer hauling hazardous material has overturned on Hwy 109 in Portland.

The accident occurred on Hwy 109/Broadway Between Industrial Dr and Morning Side Dr around 2 pm. MAP

According to Captian Scott Meece with the Portland Fire Department, “It’s stable right now but it could become very unstable very quickly if you do certain things to it. We’re in the process of leaving it be until we can get the proper clean up.”

According to Meece, the substance has a low flash point but is not necessarily explosive. “Anything can set it off, you can’t mix water with it, no sparks, no friction. The only way they are going to be able to clean it up is with a vacuum truck. Meece added that the load originated out of Gallatin and was on its way to Pennsylvania.

Meece didn’t know the name of the substance only that it will require special equipment to collect it.

Right now it’s contained inside the trailer. The only way it’s going to come out is when cleanup begins.” At that time the road will be closed. During cleanup, the fire department will have emergency equipment on hand.

We’re told the driver was able to climb out of the vehicle after the crash but specifics on their condition were not immediately available. No other injuries were reported.

The road is currently open until the cleanup begins which should start around 6 pm.

The cleanup crew is coming from Franklin TN.  There’s no word on how long the cleanup will take.

The crash occurred right in front of Gilbert Funeral Home. The owner, Britt Gilbert, told Smokey Barn News that crews at the scene told him the material was some sort of rock material that if it mixes with water it becomes explosive.

During cleanup, drivers in the area will need to seek alternative routes.

If more information becomes avlaable we will bring it to you.

UPDATE:

The Portland Fire Department released the following statement regarding the accident:

“On Wednesday crews responded to an accident on North Broadway involving an overturned tractor-trailer. Due to the hazardous load in the trailer, we had to have North Broadway shut down for a period of time while we surveyed the accident and a plan was established. Crews remained on the scene until 1 AM this morning until the cleanup process was complete in case of another emergency.

We would like to thank everyone for their assistance. We would like to thank Portland Police Department, Sumner County EMS, Summer County EMA, THP, Portland Collision, HEPACO (Cleanup Company). We would also like to thank the BBQ Pit and Dairy Queen for helping out the crews with refreshments and food. Great work by all involved.”

Motorcyclist Flees From Police Still At Large

COOPERTOWN TENNESSEE: (Smokey Barn News) – Authorities in Coopertown are trying to understand what made a motorcyclist flee during a routine traffic stop for a minor traffic violation.

Coopertown Police are attempting to identify the person pictured on the motorcycle.

The incident occurred on Wednesday afternoon around 1:30 pm.

Officers discontinued an attempt to stop the cyclist when the motorcyclist endangered the lives of other motorists.

CHARGES: According to Coopertown Police, the rider was going to be stopped for passing several vehicles on a double yellow line. That would have been a misdemeanor citation or possibly even a warning. By intentionally fleeing law enforcement, the rider now faces felony evading charges in addition to reckless endangerment for putting innocent bystanders at risk of injury or death due to their reckless driving.

“We urge the rider to come forward and take responsibility for their actions.” Coopertown Police

(Robertson County, Tn) A message from the Tennessee Department of Commerce & Insurance: It’s true: Not every hero wears a cape.

We’re raising awareness of the importance of home fire escape planning and drills during National Fire Prevention Week (October 6-12). This year’s theme is “Not Every Hero Wears a Cape. Plan and Practice Your Escape!” which works to educate everyone about the small but important actions they can take to keep themselves and those around them safe.

Sponsored by the National Fire Protection Agency since 1922, National Fire Prevention Week is observed each year during the week of October 9th to commemorate the Great Chicago Fire, which began on October 8, 1871, and caused devastation and fatalities. Fire departments and fire safety organizations use National Fire Prevention Week as a way to highlight fire safety in cities and communities across the nation.

(Springfield, TN) Mayor Confirms: Bojangles Coming To Springfield

According to Springfield Mayor Ann Schneider, Bojangles is coming to Springfield.

The new eatery will be located on Memorial Blvd MAP almost directly across from Robertson County’s longest-running auto dealer Payne Chevrolet.

The property is already being prepared for construction but we do not have an official launch date.

“It is always exciting to see new retail coming to Springfield so our citizens have more options,” said Mayor Schneider.

“We would like to welcome Bojangles to the neighborhood. It’s always nice to see new businesses coming into Springfield to help grow and cultivate our town. It’s also nice to have another option for food right across the street from us.” Payne Chevrolet

According to their website, “Bojangles’ Restaurants began as the dream of Jack Fulk and Richard Thomas, two veteran restaurant operators who predicted rising consumer demand for good food served in a quick-service environment. They based their concept on three attributes: distinctive flavor, high-quality products made-from-scratch, and a festive restaurant design with friendly service. And in 1977, their dream became a reality in the form of the first Bojangles’ restaurant in Charlotte, NC.”

(Greenbrier, TN) Not Owning A Cell Phone Puts Robertson Man In The Spotlight

If you want to call Chet Thompson of Greenbrier Tennessee on the phone you’ll have to wait until he gets home. Why? Chet doesn’t own a cell phone. The only phone he has is plugged into the wall.

The decision to opt-out of the cell phone revolution came with a price, according to Chet. “I enjoy tranquility now.” Chet is in the business of decorative concrete. Click here to see Chet’s work but be prepared to leave a message if he’s not home.

Since about 97 % of Americans own a cell phone, it’s hard to imagine someone that doesn’t but Chet says he is just fine without one. “It was supposed to connect people but it’s done the opposite,” Chet says.

This week Chet’s decision not to own a cell phone landed him on Network TV when Nashville’s Fox News dropped by his beautiful home to see if it was really true. Fox was kind enough to share their report with Smokey Barn News. Watch the report and tell us in the comments if you think you could live without a cell phone?

By the way, if Chet looks familiar to you, he’s been in the news before. A couple of years ago Chet helped Smokey Barn News with a public safety report on motorcycle awareness. We have added that video below.

More about Payne….

Payne Chevrolet: A Brief Look At Over 90 Years In Robertson County

ROBERTSON COUNTY TENNESSEE: (Smokey Barn News) – Payne Chevrolet has been a staple in Springfield, Tennessee since 1926, enduring the Great Depression and thriving throughout the years in three different locations in Robertson County. Regardless of their location, the care and support they feedback into the community have been the same since their beginning. “Our first location was established in 1926 in downtown Springfield, TN on Main Street,” said Alex Payne, and great-grandson of Byram Payne who is currently acting as the firm’s Digital Marketing Manager. “This is where the current playground/parking lot is for Springfield Baptist Church. The lot was a very tiny space, so we were only there for a few years until 1928.”

“Once a little expansion was necessary, our next location was on Locust Street, where the current Robertson County Senior Center is located. The business expanded to two different buildings, one for service and one for sales showroom and office spaces, to increase productivity. Despite the efficiency between the two buildings, the space maxed out around having 30 vehicles available at any time. So as a result of increased business, the need arose yet again for an even bigger area. So in 1969 we built a new building with more lot space and moved into our current and final location at 2807 Memorial Blvd. in Springfield, TN.

Notice the Post Office left, now the Robertson County Museum.

“Payne Chevrolet was started by Mr. Byram Payne in January of 1926. With some help from his brother Van, the two managed the business together for a few years until Byram eventually bought him out completely. Byram made it a family business and brought in his two sons to help out: Don and Bobby Payne. He was succeeded by his two sons and they managed the dealership for a number of years until Don’s sons took over.

“Currently, we are in our THIRD generation of family ownership with Jeff and David Payne at the helm. They have been co-owners and dealers since 1977 and 1985, respectively, and are continuing the family legacy. If you have relatives from Springfield, or in the neighboring towns surrounding it, you have heard about the quality care from Payne Chevrolet. We support many local schools and businesses, allowing us to pour money back into the town where we have been located for over 90 years.”

3rd Vehicle Plows Into Same Springfield House

SPRINGFIELD TENNESSEE: (Smokey Barn News) – An SUV plowed into a Springfield home Thursday evening making it the third time that a vehicle has crashed into the same home.

The accident occurred around 10:30 pm near the intersection of Pleasant Hill Dr and 5th Ave not far from downtown Springfield. MAP

The homeowner, 85-year-old Martha Ralph, wasn’t home this evening but back in May, she told Smokey Barn News that, first, some years ago, a motorcycle crashed into her home. Then, back in May of this year, a pickup landed in her living room. The truck landed just feet from where Martha was sleeping. Thankfully she was not injured. Now an SUV has crashed into her home.

The reason for the home’s popularity with vehicles is somewhat obvious, it sits in a sharp curve on Pleasant Hill Dr. Drivers are faced with a choice, turn or continue straight and crash into Martha’s home.

Fortunately, no one was inured in the crash this evening and the vehicle did not penetrate the living area of the home as it did in May, however, the driver of the SUV was taken into custody by Springfield Police following a field sobriety test.

Martha Ralph wasn’t home at the time of the accident this evening. She learned about the crash from a voicemail from Springfield Police. Neighbors told Smokey Barn News that repairs from the crash back in May had just been completed.

Smokey Barn News was there back in May when the pickup crashed into the home, we have added our full report for you below.

The Springfield Fire Department, Robertson County EMS, and the Springfield Police Department all responded to the scene.

Truck Plows Into Home Inches From Sleeping 85-year-old Woman

SPRINGFIELD TENNESSEE: (Smokey Barn News) – It’s not too often that you can say that the arrangement of your furniture saved your life but it was a fact for a Springfield woman who was asleep on the couch when a pickup truck crashed into her living room window early Friday.

85-year-old Martha Ralph of Springfield was sound asleep when the pickup truck crashed into her home sending wood, brick, and glass exploding into her living room. The only part of the room unaffected was the couch where she was sleeping.

The accident occurred just after midnight near the intersection of Pleasant Hill Dr and 5th Ave not far from downtown Springfield. MAP

Ms. Ralph said she has lived in the home since 1960 and other than a motorcycle crashing into her home some time ago, this was the only other vehicle that tried to park in her living room.

Sponsored

Ms. Ralph did get a small cut on her leg in the ordeal but she got that trying to navigate over the carnage after the crash.

Neighbors from next door and across the street heard the crash and leaped into action coming to Ms. Ralph’s aid, all of them relieved that she was uninjured. Ms. Ralph said, “Thank the Lord that I’m here, it just wasn’t my time to go.”

Neighbor Scott Murphy told Smokey Barn News that he was in his back yard and heard what sounded like a race vehicle coming down the street followed by rubber squealing and a big boom. Tire marks on the street confirm Murphy’s account.

The Springfield Fire Department, Robertson County EMS, Springfield Police and Drake’s Towing & Auto repair all responded to the scene.

The driver was not injured in the crash but was taken into custody by Springfield Police.

SPRINGFIELD TENNESSEE: (smokey Barn News) A lonely tree planted in front of Rod’s Tire in Springfield still grows almost five years after it was planted in the memory of a man that lost his life there.

On December 30th of 2014, Joseph Moss, 37 of Springfield, TN was found dead on the side of the road.  Springfield Police Detectives concluded that Moss had been struck by a passing vehicle.

investigators-at-hit-and-runThe accident occurred on Memorial Blvd directly in front of Rod’s Tire & Automotive Service Center. MAP.

After a year-long investigation, Springfield Police identified Glenn Gainous, 40, of Springfield as a suspect in connection with the case.

On March 22, 2016, Gainous was charged with “Leaving the Scene of an Accident with a Death.”

Move forward to a hearing that was held last week (October 14th, 2019) in which the prosecution and defense presented information to Circuit Court Judge Jill Bartee. After the information was presented,  Bartee dismissed the case against Gainous, citing a lack of evidence, according to Robertson County Assistant D.A. Jason White.

The D.A. added that if new evidence is uncovered further charges could be brought.

After talking to the Robertson County D.A.’s office and officials with the Springfield Police department, the case remains open and the pursuit for closure continues.

Joe Moss was one of the most good-hearted people you would ever meet, according to Long time friend, Jennifer Woody. “There was not one kid that didn’t love him, and he loved kids, he didn’t have any children but I think that’s what he always wanted. My children cried when they heard about his passing.

He loved the Raiders, the Lakers and the Dodgers, Joe was a sports fanatic. There have been so many Sundays and Saturdays at our house just watching ball, that’s what he loved to do.

Everybody that knew Joe Moss loved him, being with Joe Moss was kind of like being with the mayor, there’s wasn’t anybody that he didn’t know. To know him was to love him,” Jennifer said.

According to Jennifer Woody, Joe Moss went to Springfield High and his mother Donna Joe Moss was a teacher there too.

Joe and his mother were both runners and Jennifer Woody tells us Donna Joe ran in the Boston Marathon. “Joe may have been running last night, he ran because he liked to do it,” Woody said.

SPRINGFIELD TENNESSEE: (Smokey Barn News) – We have an update for you regarding the stolen iPhone and carrying case we told you about on Tuesday. If you recall, Springfield Police had reached out to the community for assistance identifying the man pictured. He was wanted for questioning regarding the missing items.

Jason Hunter PHOTO: Robertson County Jail

Now (with the help of the community)  Springfield Police say they have identified the man and they are releasing his identity. Police say, Jason Hunter, 37, of Greenbrier is the man captured on video surveillance allegedly removing the missing items. The incident occurred at a local convenience store where, according to Springfield Police, Hunter can be seen allegedly picking up a wallet/cell-phone combination case that was incidentally left behind by another patron.

Robertson Countians have an excellent track record identifying persons of interest for local authorities. The last one took about 45 seconds and Springfield Police are grateful for your help. This one was no different. Almost immediately tips on the man’s identity came flooding in.

The incident occurred on Thursday, October 10, 2019, around 6:00 PM at the Korner Market located on the corner of 5th and Kinneys Rd. MAP

The carrying-case concealed an iPhone 8 and an assortment of Credit/Debit Cards. Minutes after the suspect allegedly left the store with the iPhone and case, the patron returned to the store looking for their property.

Now, according to Springfield Police, the iPhone and wallet (including the credit cards) have been recovered and have been returned to the owner.

Police tell Smokey Barn News that Hunter confessed and he was taken into custody. Hunter was charged with Theft-Of-Property-Over $500 and Failure-To-Appear. His bond was set at $1,250.00. He was transported to the Robertson County Detention Facility in Springfield. As of 8 pm on Friday evening, Hunter has not bonded out.

Orlinda City Manager And Dog Escape Home Fire

ORLINDA TENNESSEE: (Smokey Barn News) – Orlinda City Manager Kevin Breeding was sound asleep when the faint sound of a smoke detector buzzing woke him up and likely saved his life.

Breeding got up and opened the door to his bedroom and was hit by a wall of smoke. According to Breeding, the smoke, from the ceiling, came down to his chest. He wasted no time, he grabbed a cell phone, the dog and ran out the door without even stopping to shoes or a jacket. As Breeding ran for the exit he could see the kitchen was engulfed in a fireball.

The home is located near Hwy 49 and Brewer Rd. MAP The call came into 911 an 10:52 pm on Tuesday evening.

Firefighters from Orlinda, Cross Plains, Springfield, and the White House Community Volunteer Fire Department responded quickly and stopped the fire from spreading.

According to Orlinda Fire Chief Dusty Johnson, about 85% of the home is intact however there is heavy smoke damage through and modest water damage but the home will need considerable repairs before it will be livable again.

Fire Chief Johnson said that Breeding is alive because of two things, he kept the door to his bedroom closed and he had working smoke detectors. Breeding, who has lived in the home since 2011, said there was no question that the smoke detector saved his life. “There’s no doubt about that,” Breeding said.

Breeding said he has a fire extinguisher but he knew it would be no help against the big ball of fire. As far as a cause of the fire, Chief Johnson was leaning towards a possible stove malfunction.

Breeding has been the City Manager for Orlinda for 19 years.

The Orlinda Fire Department, Cross Plains Fire, the Springfield Fire Department, Robertson County EMS, the Robertson County Sheriff’s Office and the Robertson County Emergency Management Agency all responded to the call.
